Aviron licensed this vaccine from the University in 1995 and entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) for its development.

Shares of flu-fighting drug developer Aviron (Nasdaq: AVIR) were dropped for a loss of more than 10% in morning trading after the company last night released an update on its hotly awaited nasal spray flu vaccine.

TheStreet.com: Aviron Could Make a Healthy Comeback
Aviron appears to have finally stopped its downward trend, as its share price and trading volume have been slowly creeping up.
Before Aviron's late-July announcement, rumors were flying that someone was shorting its stock, while Morgan Stanley maintained its long position on the company: hence the stock's volatility.
Aviron believes FluMist can be ready for the 2002-2003 flu season and that it'll eventually lead the company to a path of profitability.

Fool.com: Aviron's FluMist Coughs (Fool Plate Special) November 15, 1999
Shares of Aviron have been hot in 1999 on optimism about the potential of FluMist, a nasal-spray flu vaccine expected to be the company's first product.
Aviron yesterday said it won't file a BLA with the government before the end of the year, citing inconsistent information arising from what were thought to be "routine" tests.
Those questions have dogged the company since early September when the government first turned down Aviron's marketing application, citing a need for more information about how the drug was made -- and a look at an Aviron chart cements the impression that news has had on investors.

Aviron slides with product delay - Jul. 30, 2001
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Aviron shares sank Monday after a U.S. Food and Drug Association panel voted Friday not to recommend the company's nasal influenza vaccine on the grounds of insufficient safety data.
The FDA vaccination panel voted 10 to 4 in favor of rejecting Aviron's FluMist spray, saying it would re-evaluate the product after the company submitted a complete analysis of the safety data supporting the license application.
Six of the 10 panelists said the safety data is not sufficient, but with more data, they think the vaccine will pass," she said.
