Review - Avishai Cohen & The International Vamp Band: Unity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Avishai Cohen, an Israeli bassist and bandleader, has the kind of chops that have allowed him to play with the likes of Roy Hargrove, Leon Parker, Joshua Redman and Wynton Marsalis before being snagged as a permanent member of Chick Corea's band.
A lot of understanding developed quite quickly when you consider that Cohen is just 31 years old and has spent most of his time and energy on the bass.
Cohen's bandmates represent four nations, adding both gravity to the title of the album and a variety of musical flavors.

Bassist Avishai Cohen [+]'s fourth Stretch release marks the debut of a new project, the International Vamp Band, which first went public in early 2001 in a series of performances at the Jazz Gallery in New York.
(Cohen's bass student Bryan Keleen guests on "Island Man.") While Cohen's piano playing is not virtuosic (although it comes close on the solo piece "Pause"), his intention is simply to approach bandleading from a different vantage point.
It's hypnotic, as the term "vamp" would suggest, and it's often downright soothing -- which is appropriate, given that Cohen intended the album as a prayer for peace, particularly in his native Israel, which was descending into a state of war at the time of this recording.

Avishai Cohen, Devotion - PopMatters Music Review
Cohen is especially happy to write pieces which stretch our expectations, as for example writing bass lines in conjunction with the oud (on "Musa"), a string quartet (Ti-Da-Do-Di-Do) featuring Cohen overdubbing with the bass and Danny Freedman accompanying on balafon.
Before settling in NY in 1992, Cohen spent most of his life in Isreal (except for a brief period in the 80s when he lived in the U.S.).
Cohen also turns to the rhythms of the African diaspora with songs like "Negril" and "El Capitan & The Ship at Sea." A particularly beautiful, and all too short, piece is "Linda De Mi Corazon," which features Cohen and singer Claudia Acuna.

Avishai's new album is an impressive achievement and is similar to his previous albums in that it is loaded with worldly rhythms and hummable melodies.
The album also showcases Cohen's prowess on the electric bass more prominently, particularly on "Handsonit" a number which features a fleet fingered melody with electric bass and horns giving way to a soulful bridge and a great trumpet tradeoff.

Israeli bassist/composer Avishai Cohen is perhaps best known for playing with Chick Corea, but he was never destined to be a sideman; his songwriting and arranging skills are too developed.
The album is divided between tracks featuring Cohen’s trio with keyboardist Sam Barsh and drummer Mark Guiliana and a larger group that sometimes augments the trio and sometimes replaces it.
The songs are all written and arranged by Cohen (except “Leh-Lah,” cowritten with Guiliana, and “Renouf’s Last Tooth,” composed with Guiliana and Barsh).

Avishai Cohen is “a jazz visionary of global proportions.
In a mere seven years since his first upright bass lesson, Cohen had become a founding member of Chick Corea's acoustic sextet, Origin, and had recorded a debut solo album, Adama.
In 2003, Cohen founded his own Razdaz Records and his debut recording, Lyla, was hailed as “a remarkable synthesis of Sephardic folk-song, Cuban jazz, tightly wrought postbop and funk” (The Guardian, UK).

CD Review of Avishai Cohen - Lyla on Razdaz Recordz @ jazzreview.com
Thrilled by the success of his musical career in the United States, Avishai Cohen has become less focused, as if his ceaseless curiosity leads him to explore every nook and cranny of the musical styles that interest him.
But by mixing all of Cohen’s current interests into one CD, he dilutes the effort, requiring the listener to find one preferred track while skipping over some of the others, not really absorbing the breadth of Cohen’s talent because of its jarring diversity.
Reportedly, the second CD on Cohen’s new label will record his rock band, Gadu, and no doubt that project will stay focused on a unified style that will attract listeners with its consistency and its force.

Cohen's technique and sound is a marvel and the group he has assembled, a trio with a supporting cast, is one of new names for a lot of people but one that will surely cause some interest in their own right.
While certainly not an album of the year or a career, At Home should garner a lot more attention then what it is getting and it is certainly better than a lot of other albums that do get advertising and a strong puch (then again we all know these problems).
