Avoca Handweavers is the oldest surviving working mill in Ireland today and dates from 1723.
Situated on the River Avoca, the N.11 road, and the Dublin/Rosslare rail line, Arklow is an excellent base for exploring County Wicklow and neighbouring counties, the Vale of Avoca to the east and the glorious sandy Beaches of Brittas Bay to the north.
Arklow was one of the first towns developed in Ireland by the Vikings in the 8th and 9th centuries.

Nobody I know comes from Avoca village itself but I have one friend who's from Ballycooleen and Avoca would be their nearest shopping place.
Avoca is made to look much bigger on TV than it actually is, which we knew.
If you live in Ireland, no doubt you do, but I was totally surprised to find that mining was essentially what had "made" the town economically.

Wicklow is characterised by two things in particular; the wind-swept mountains which frame the county, and the fact that even on a good day you'll find very few people being swept by the wind.
