This means a regulation of the interaction between Jews and idolaters (who represented most of the Gentile population during the time of the Talmud) in terms of both distancing the Jew from the act of idolatry in every shape as well as distancing a Jew from the threat of assimilation and cultural influence.
This (The second part of the Talmud consisting primarily of commentary on the Mishna) Gemara on Avodah Zarah was the main target of controversy and criticism.
In terms of the actual length of the Gemara, Avodah Zarah is fairly close to the middle, being an "average" length tractate.

AVODAH ZARAH   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Avodah Zarah is the term for a Pesel (an idol or graven image) or anything such as the sun or the moon, or even a person, which people mistakenly believe is an independent power with G-d-like attributes, which they worship and to which they pray.
Avodah Zarah is one of the three cardinal sins about which Jews are commanded, "Yehareg v'Al Ya'avor" - "One should be killed rather than transgress." (The other two are Giluy Arayos - forbidden relations and Sheficus Damim - murder.
The prohibition to serve Avodah Zarah is one of the Ten Commandments, "Lo Yiheyeh Lecha Elokim Acherim Al Panai.

INSITES OF THE DAY - Avodah Zarah, Daf 47
Rav Dimi explains that his question is whether the nullification (Bitul) of Avodah Zarah that occurs when the Lulav is cut from the tree permits the Lulav to be used for a Mitzvah or not.
As he proves in the Bi'ur Halachah, a house that hosted an idol is considered "Meshamshei Avodah Zarah," an object which served the purpose of Avodah Zarah (as is evident from the Gemara earlier (19b), regarding a person hired to build a house of worship).
Apparently, according to this opinion the Avodah Zarah was not simply removed from the house, but it was removed from being worshipped as an Avodah Zarah permanently, in any place, and therefore it is considered to have been nullified.

The Sifra (a midrash from the time of the Mishna) states that, in its figurative sense, the commandment forbids one to give bad or damaging advice; after all, the receiving party is "blind" in this matter and will "stumble" as a result of the improper guidance (Sifra de-vei Rav, Kedoshim 2:14).
The Talmud (tractate Avodah Zarah 6b) expands the principle to include giving anyone the means or opportunity to commit a sin where that person would otherwise lack these.
Examples given there include giving a cup of wine to a person who has taken the nazirite vow (which forbids him/her to partake in wine or grape products).

Idolatry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the New Testament, the Greek word is found only in the letters of Paul, 1 Peter, and Revelation, where it has a derogatory meaning.
There are many Hebrew terms for idolatry such as avodah zarah, "foreign worship", and avodat kochavim umazalot, "worship of planets and constellations".
In this case, it seems just to say that the term idolatry is a misnomer (or blind) in that even a simple interpretation of Exodus makes it clear that it is not so much the graven image or idol, but the worship of anything other than YHVH which is condemned.

 Rambam - Torah.org
Rashi (Avodah Zarah 36b) explains that if the *goy kulo* - entire nation - accepts upon themselves a stringent rule (such as bringing the tithes to the storehouse - see Malakhi 3:10), then the decree is valid; but, if not, it has no force.
In Bava Kamma and Avodah Zarah, the discussion revolves around Beit-Din initiated rules, which were limited (Bava Kamma) or annulled (Avodah Zarah) because of the relative feasibility of the community's upholding them.
One of the decrees was not to use non-Jewish oil (see the Gemara in Avodah Zarah for two possible rationales for this decree).

Spark of the Week 5756-22: The False Prophet
On the surface, this verse would seem to be stating that, in advocating avodah zarah, this individual is veering us away from the path of Hashem.
As such, the incorrect presentation of the mitzvot is a form of avodah zarah for this presentation not only misleads us in regard to the proper conduct demanded in the service of Hashem -- it misleads us as to the true nature of Him.
The distinctive nature of the navi sheker category when it involves avodah zarah is further indicated by the special enumeration of this specific prohibition in Chinuch, mitzvah 518.

 CHRISTIANITY AND IDOL WORSHIP
The Rambam stated that Christianity as opposed to Islam is a clear case of avodah zarah (idol worship).
Now all poskim (rabbis whose legal decisions are authority) agree that Jews who turn their back to Torah and follow another religion are engaging in avodah zarah (idol worship).
So the question should be whether Christianity and/or Islam are considered to be avoda zarah (idol worshippers) for a b’nei Noach (children of Noah).

According to the opinion that Molech is Avodah Zarah, the verse is teaching that there is Kares for "Ma'avir Beno" to all forms of Avodah Zarah, even when it is not the manner to serve that particular Avodah Zarah in such a way.
(3) This refers to serving the Avodah Zarah with any one of the four standard Avodos (Zivu'ach, Kitur, Nisuch, Hishtachava'ah), even though this is not the normal manner of serving this Avodah Zarah.
(That is, it either teaches Kares for the sin of Molech, or for the sin of serving Avodah Zarah with the four forms of Avodah or with "Ma'avir Beno," when it is not the normal manner of serving that Avodah Zarah; see previous footnote).

There are only three sins over which death is preferable: murder, incest/aldultery and avodah zarah.
(Usually mistranslated as "idol worship," avodah zarah is understood to refer to the pagan religions which surrounded the ancient Israelites, whose worship DID involve idols, but more to the point it involved human sacrifice.
As such, avodah zarah is considered to be an affront both to God and man.)

The statement that Azrael was named in the book Avodah Zarah is incorrect.
The only variation of the name Azrael that we have found, is the name Azra (English: Ezra), the scribe who established the Laws of God (Jewish Law) during second Temple Jerusalem.
Because he was so well respected concerning Jewish Law, including supposed violations of Jewish Law, such as Avodah Zarah (strange worship and idolotry), his name is often referenced as a source during legal debates and elaborations (see Gemara).

A prominent rosh yeshiva said that Jews are spiritually superior to other people because Jews and non-Jews “have different genes, DNA, and instincts.” The recent controversy over wigs made from the hair of Hindu woman in India is based on the concept that Hinduism is avodah zarah — idolatry — and therefore forbidden.
For example, in the Mishnah Avodah Zara 2:1, Jews are advised not to lend their domestic animals to non-Jews because they are suspected of bestiality.
The halachic decision to categorize non-Jews as idol worshippers has meant that wine poured by a non-Jew is unkosher, based on the notion that the wine may have been offered as a libation on some pagan altar.

 Talmud and Bible
In Talmud Berachot 21a we see that when in doubt whether a biblical commandment has been fulfilled one must repeat it but when in doubt whether a rabbinic commandment has been fulfilled there is no need to repeat it.
A similar idea is repeated in Talmud Avodah Zarah 7a - when there are two opinions about a biblical commandment we follow the stricter opinion but when there are two opinions about a rabbinic commandment we follow the more lenient opinion.
Anyone familiar with Talmudic thinking immediately recognizes the ridiculousness of a claim that Judaism considers the Talmud more important than the Bible.

The most famous talmudic passage concerning euthanasia is the story of Rabbi Chanina ben Teradion (Avodah Zarah 18a), who was wrapped by the Romans in a Scroll of the Law (Torah), with bundles of straw around him which were set on fire.
The Romans also put tufts of wool which had been soaked in water over his heart so that he should not die quickly.

In her important study, Christine Hayes critiques a historical approach that posits external explanations for divergences between the two Talmuds without paying sufficient attention to internal factors.
Nonetheless, Hayes argues that under certain conditions halakhic difference can provide information of use to the historian.
She thus shows that our knowledge of the different characters of the two Talmuds and their particular hermeneutical and dialectical practices acts not only as a brake on inappropriate historical analysis but also as a guide to appropriate historical analysis.

Even the nullification of the hair's sanctity by those who sell these wigs to the general public, if that is a nullification, does not remove the prohibition (see Shulhan Arukh, Yoreh De'ah 139:1-2).
