In 1996 the county was abolished and the area split between Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire unitary local authorities.
Avon was one of the counties in the "first tranche" of reviews conducted by the Banham Commission in the 1990s.
The demise of the County of Avon was the focus of a BBC documentary called The End of Avon, produced by Linda Orr and Michael Lund and broadcast in 1996.

 Bidford-on-Avon Parish Council - Procedures
A decision (whether affirmative or negative) of the Council shall not be reversed within six months except either by a special resolution, the written notice whereof bears the names of at least (4) members of the Council, or by a resolution moved in pursuance of the report or recommendation of a committee.
No member of the Council or of any committee or working group shall disclose to any person not a member of the Council any business declared to be confidential by the Council, the committee or the working group as the case may be.
The Council shall deal with complaints of maladministration allegedly committed by the Council or by any officer or member in such manner as adopted by the Council except for those complaints which should be properly directed to the Standards Board for consideration.

The county is responsible for the strategic plans which set out policies for the location of new development such as housing, industry, shopping and leisure facilities and the transport to serve these.
Parish councils were established by the Local Government Act 1894, but most of their legal powers were abolished by the 1972 Local Government Act.
Council tax makes up 25 per cent of the revenue, business rates 24 per cent, 18 per cent is recovered in fees and charges and the remaining 33 per cent comes from central government.

 County Council OKs homestead exemption
The Democrat-controlled Allegheny County Council approved a tiny cut in the county's property tax rate last night, pushing a 3-month-old conflict with county Chief Executive Jim Roddey to the brink of resolution.
Under state law, the county cannot increase its tax rate to compensate for revenue lost in a homestead exemption, which is $10,000 and would save every homeowner $46.90, assuming a 4.69-mill rate.
Council members voted unanimously to appoint James Fenton, a Democrat from Mt. Lebanon, to the vacant seat in council's District 6.

Although the Avon Pension Fund has the advantage of having one of the highest funding levels (meaning that employer contribution rates are below average), the scale of the increase in employer contribution rates required with effect from 1 April 2005 is unlikely to be much different from those of other funds.

It is a home rule municipality in Eagle County, with the county seat located 20 miles to the west in the Town of Eagle.
Box cars stood at the Avon Depot, loaded with ice from the Minturn ice house (the ice had been cut the preceding winter at Pando up near Tennessee Pass) and readied for freshly cut lettuce heads delivered in crates by farmers and their ranch hands including wives.

Avon Park has to have it worse, and Frostproof, Florida in Polk County to the north has it real bad too, as well as Lake Wales, the county seat in Polk County, Florida.

 Bidford-on-Avon Parish Council
The Council has a long time lease on its Parish Council Office and Meeting Room which are situated in the School/Library complex on Bramley Way.
The Parish Council has now started the process of ensuring that all the matters which can be 'driven' by the Parish are implemented and, where necessary, monitored.
Currently, the Parish Council is very concerned about what it considers the over-development of the village and is trying to stop further back garden developments taking place, although it is not finding this easy.

The County of Avon came into being on 1 April 1974.

 The Avon (Structural Change) Order 1995
Article 5 provides for the abolition of the county of Avon and of certain Avon districts and councils.
Article 11 effects the structural change by providing for the transfer, on 1st April 1996, of the functions of Avon County Council, in relation to each district in the county to the transferee authority for that district.

 Hampshire County Council
Avon County Council took the matter to the High Court because they were affected in relation to Somerset County Council.
The Police Authority recently decided not to seek any change to the proportions in the contractual contribution from the two County Councils, but whether this stance should be maintained may have to be reconsidered.
Further advice will be given as soon as all the circumstances have been explored and, for the meantime, it is RECOMMENDED that the outcome of the High Court action involving Avon County Council be noted, and that the officers be instructed to report further before the budget for 1991/92 is prepared.
