Avon and Somerset Constabulary is a police force in England covering the county of Somerset and the districts of South Gloucestershire, Bristol, North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset; these districts were the now defunct county of Avon hence the force's name.
Somerset is a county in the south-west of England.
Avon was formed from the City and County of Bristol and parts of Gloucestershire and Somerset by the Local Government Act 1972, and came into being on April 1, 1974.

The County of Avon was a short-lived non-metropolitan county and ceremonial county in the west of England, named after the River Avon which ran through it.
For ceremonial purposes, the post of Lord Lieutenant of Avon has been abolished, Bristol has regained its own Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff, while the other authorities were returned to their traditional counties.
Also, Avon County Council funded funded Sustrans' first cycleway, the Bristol and Bath railway path, which lead to the creation of the National Cycle Network.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary is a police force in England covering the county of Somerset and the districts of South Gloucestershire, Bristol, North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset; these districts were the now defunct county of Avon hence the force's name.

Her Majesty's Inspector Constabulary (HMIC) and the Police Standards Unit are currently working with a number of forces, whose performance is significantly below the average for their most similar forces, to help them address performance issues.
Avon and Somerset police force introduced the standard in October 2000.

Somerset Project Partner, Wessex Grain, will arrange the supply of bioethanol, initially from a bioethanol plant in Spain using wheat grown in the South West region!  Wessex Grain are finalising proposals for a bioethanol plant at Henstridge which would allow cars in Somerset to run fuel from locally grown wheat by 2007.
Somerset County Council is taking steps to put the County’s motorists in harmony with their environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from car transport.   In partnership with Ford Motor Company, Wessex Grain and Wessex Biofuels, the Council has applied for European funding to develop the use of bioethanol as a transport fuel in the County. 
Somerset County Council obtained a grant of £67,000 for the installation from the DTI Major Photovoltaic Demonstration Programme.
