It was announced last week that the U.S. FDA has issued a product safety alert about Avonex (interferon beta-1a), and the drug's distributor, Biogen Idec, has issued a letter to healthcare professionals about changes in its labeling that better reflect the risk of liver injury.
The new wording suggests that before prescribing Avonex, doctors should consider the potential risk of Avonex if it will be used with other drugs or products (such as alcohol) that are known to be toxic to the liver.
The FDA labeling for each of the three interferon beta medications used in MS (Avonex and Rebif, which are both interferon beta-1a and Betaseron, which is interferon beta-1b) includes recommendations for periodic liver function testing.
