  Avro Information
Avro was a British aircraft manufacturer, well known for planes such as the Avro Lancaster which served in World War II.
The Royal Flight of the United Kingdom bought a few and a variant with a rear-loading ramp and a "kneeling" main undercarriage was sold to the RAF and several members of the Commonwealth as the Andover, named after a town in Hampshire.
When the company was absorbed into Hawker Siddeley Aviation in July 1963 the Avro name seemed to have disappeared forever but the brand had such a strong heritage appeal that the marketing name "Avro RJ" (regional jet) was applied to the British Aerospace 146 from 1994 to 2001.

 Encyclopedia: Avro 707
Avro 707A (WZ736) at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester was one of a series of aircraft that investigated the delta-wing shape for the Avro Vulcan.
Avro 707C (WZ744) at Cosford was another of the aircraft that investigated the delta-wing shape.
However, the Avro 707 family of research aircraft gave British aircraft designers early confidence in the general handling characteristics of the delta-wing, which lead to its adoption on other aircraft types (several of which where cancelled in 1957), and some of the systems tested found a direct application on other military aircraft programmes.

 Avro 707
The origins of the Avro 707 are intertwined with those of the Avro Vulcan.
For various reasons, the early Avro 707s took too long to reach the flight test stage, and consequently their direct contribution to the Type 698 Vulcan programme was comparatively small.
However, the Avro 707 family of research aircraft gave British aircraft designers early confidence in the general handling characteristics of the delta-wing, which lead to its adoption on other aircraft types (several of which where cancelled in 1957), and some of the systems tested found a direct application on other military aircraft programmes.

 Background
Avro Canada was in an excellent position to hire the best engineering minds in the world, as the end of the war released huge numbers of engineers onto the international job market.
Avro’s first project was to be a jet transport aircraft for Trans Canada Airlines, later known as Air Canada.
Instead, Howe proclaimed, Avro was to concentrate fully on producing the CF 100 Canuck jet fighter, designed to protect the vast northern wastes of Canada from the advance of Soviet nuke-carrying long range, high-altitude bombers coming in over the Arctic icecap.

The Avro 707 series of delta-winged aircraft were flown to test, in smaller scale, the aerodynamic and handling qualities of the Vulcan bomber.
The second prototype, designated Avro 707B, flew on 6 September 1950 with a revised front fuselage and nose wheel.
Vulcan type wing intakes were fitted on the next aircraft to fly which was designated Avro 707A and a second similar machine followed.

Whilst the wind tunnel results certainly suggested that the landing characteristics of the aircraft could be greatly improved, the cost of modifying the wings of the aircraft was considered to outweigh the value of knowledge that might be gained.
The decision by the AARC to abandon the Avro project was based upon the high cost of modifications and consideration that results derived from the thick 707A wing would not be applicable to the supersonic Mirage.
Her flying duties complete, Avro 707A, with 486 hours 40 minutes "on the clock", was to remain in storage at Avalon until 1967.

 Background and Construction
The three manufactures to rise to the challenge were Avro with the 698 design (later to become the Vulcan), Handley Page with the HP.80 (later to become the Victor) and Vickers type 660 (to become the Valient).
Avro had already had massive success with the Lancaster Bomber, which has come to be one of the most enduring images of the RAF during the war, and their chief designer Roy Chadwick, who designed the Lancaster itself took to designing the first prototype, the 698.
Avro were then awarded the contract for the specification with Handley Page being used as insurance with their HP.80.

TWA were trying to get Avro to build them 30 Jetliners and the USAF had allocated funds for the purchase of 20 military Jetliners for jet bomber pilot and navigation training.
After a number of years of flying in support of the CF 100 flight test program the only Jetliner was finally broken up for scrap in December 1956 after more than seven years of almost faultless flying and paving the way for the new generation of jet transports.

 AVRO VULCAN - HISTORY
Avro's chief designer, Roy Chadwick immediately began an unusual design based on a delta wing concept and a matter of months later, the design had been submitted and had won the contest (along with Handley Page's HP.80 design - later to become the Victor).
The design was changed before the familiar Vulcan layout was settled on; fins on the wingtips became a single conventional fin, and the nose was extended along with the addition of a distinct fuselage section as opposed to the near-flying-wing idea originally envisaged.
At one point the RAF wanted a twin-seat 707 for use as a Vulcan trainer, but eventually this was not required and only one such 707, the 707C, was built.

Simultaneously with the flight tests of Avro 707, wind tunnel investigations were being conducted to supplement the flight tests.and The low speed wind tunnel tests were conducted using the 9' by 7' wind tunnel and a complete 1/8th scale model of the aircraft that had been supplied by A.V.Roe and Co.
Surface pressures were measured at low speed on both the Avro 707 in flight, and on the scale model in the 9' by 7' wind tunnel.
The first phase of the research programme utilising WD280 consisted of conducting a detailed evaluation of the development of flow separation and then comparing this with the model.

The Avro 707 series of research aircraft was designed as the test bed for the delta wing design used on the Avro Vulcan bomber.
Three variants of the 707 were designed, the 707A for high speed testing, the 707B for low speed testing, and the 707C a two seat trainer.
The Avro 707B has a dorsal air intake to feed the Rolls-Royce Derwent engine; this was a separate part that had to be blended to the upper surface of the fuselage, a small portion of the forward edge of the vertical tail also had to be removed to allow installation.

Though the Avro Jetliner was just 13 days behind the British Comet, it was years ahead of the Boeing 707, the Jetliner did not have the problems of the Comet and when you look at it you must ask why did Canada not back this great aircraft!
The first flight was without any problems and the only problem in over 500 hours of flight occured on the second flight (16 August 1949) when the aircraft had to make an emergency belly-landing because the main gear would not extend (the damage was so minor that the aircraft was flying within three weeks).

To meet this challenge, Vickers, Avro, and Handley Page were each called upon to develop bombers for the Royal Air Force culminating in the Valiant, Vulcan, and Victor.
Avro opted for a delta wing design in its model 698, the Vulcan, second of the triad to enter service.
As the B.1 began entering service as a high-level bomber, Avro began development of an improved B.2 with an enlarged wing, revised control surface arrangement, in-flight refueling capability, and lengthened fuselage.

Avro Arrow '09 - Above Top Secret Conspiracy Community
The Avro Arrow, while deserving of great admiration, seems to be heading towards the same levels of 'overhype' that the Nazi's are currently getting on here.
The French had been flying the Mirage since 1955, the UK had the Avro 707 and Vulcan, Boulton Paul P.111 and, after its first flight in 1954, the Fairey Delta 2 became, in 1956, the first aeroplane to set a world speed record above 1,000mph.
Well I've read that the Avro was scraped because of the idea that guided long range missiles would replace the aircraft all together so they scarped the project to save money, this was a pretty stupid assumption to make.

 AVRO
In the post war years the factory's Avro title was absorbed into Hawker Siddeley Aviation with the industry's rationalisation in 1963, and further changes in 1977 saw the Chadderton plant become part of British Aerospace. In 1999 a further name change was made to BAE SYSTEMS.
The aircraft produced at Chadderton in recent years, the Avro 748 and ATP Advanced Turboprop airliners and components for the BAe 146 and RJ Regional Jet Avroliner, may not be as familiar as their predecessors, but are no less significant in the world's air transport industry.
The Avro Anson was-already in production and serving with the RAF and a number of other countries after pre-war deliveries was soon alongside the Blenheim, but the Company was pinning its hopes on the new Avro Manchester bomber.
