Avro Aircraft, their first (and at the time, only) division, started operations in the former Victory Aircraft factories in Malton (now embedded in the Toronto suburb of Mississauga).
A.V. Roe Canada's first design started in 1946 as the Avro CF-100, a large jet-powered all-weather interceptor at the end of the era of propeller-driven aircraft and the beginning of the jet age.
In 1962, Avro in the UK was purchased by Hawker-Siddeley, in one of a number of ongoing mergers in the UK aviation industry.

The C-102 Jetliner was a prototype medium-range jet airliner built by Avro Canada in 1949.
However continued delays in Avro's all-weather interceptor project, the Avro CF-100, led to an order to stop working on the project in 1951, and the prototype Jetliner was later cut up for scrap.
Avro was involved in designing the first dedicated jet-powered night fighter for the RCAF at the time, the Avro CF-100 Canuck.

Avro Canada, which had been established by the British Hawker Siddeley group in July 1945 through purchase of the Victory Aircraft plant, got the formal contract to develop the new aircraft under AIR Spec 7-1 in October 1946.
Since Avro Canada's test pilots didn't have fast jet experience at the time, first flight honors were performed by Bill Waterton, a Canadian who was the chief test pilot of the British Gloster firm, which was part of the Hawker Siddeley group.
Avro Canada then proposed a "CF-100 Mark 8" that would carry long-range missiles and feature improved radar and new engines, but the Canadian government had already selected the the US McDonnell F-101B Voodoo as their next-generation interceptor.

Even while Avro was looking at the specifications that the RCAF needed for their new interceptor, and coming up with a design that would meet them, some members of parliament thought that it would still be best if the CF-100 was replaced with an existing aircraft, preferably one to be purchased from the United States.
Avro also said that if they were to produce and deliver 100 aircraft with the even cheaper, but almost as good MA-1 fire control system, they could reduce the unit price even more, to $3.75 million, and would be able to produce four aircraft in the same amount of money the government allotted for one.
In September of 1958, Avro had done their own secret assessment of the BOMARC's capability, and came to the conclusions that, because it was extremely vulnerable to carcinogenic jamming, it was dangerous, as well as useless.

In April 1953, after a year of analysis by Avro, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) presented a requirement for a twin-engined, two-seat interceptor with a maximum speed of Mach 2, a maximum ceiling of 18.3 kilometers (60,000 feet), and a combat radius of 370 kilometers (200 nautical miles).
The Avro team originally selected the new Rolls-Royce RB.106, but development of that engine was delayed in turn, and the Pratt and Whitney J75, used on the Republic F-105 Thunderchief and Convair F-106 Delta Dart, was chosen to power the preproduction prototypes, which were designated "Mark 1".
However, Canada was in a recession and the Arrow had become the most expensive single defense project the country had ever taken on.

James Arthur Chamberlin was one of the major figures in aircraft design in Canada before he moved to the United States and made important contributions to the the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and shuttle programs in his career at NASA and in private industry.
By the time Avro moved into design and construction of the CF-105 Avro Arrow in the mid 1950s, Chamberlin was Avro¹s chief of technical design.The twin-engined delta-winged supersonic jet interceptor was considered the most advanced aircraft of its time.
In April, 1959, Chamberlin and two dozen other engineers from Avro Canada were recruited by NASA for the Space Task Group at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.
