The original Type 688 Tudor was conceived in 1943 to Specification 29/43 as a commercial conversion of the Lancaster for use over the North Atlantic as a quick replacement for the bomber-transports then being used.

  Avro Tudor Information
The Avro Tudor was a piston-engined airliner based on Avro's four-engine Lincoln bomber, itself a descendant of the famous Avro Lancaster.
Avro began work on the Type 688 Tudor in 1943, following Specification 29/43 for a commercial adaptation of the Lancaster IV bomber, which was later renamed Lincoln.
Early Tudors had a short, rounded, fin and rudder; this was discovered to provide insufficient directional stability, and so in later aircraft a taller, straight-edged, fin/rudder combination of greater overall area was fitted.

 Testing The Avro Jetliner
While in England and at Avro's, we flew the jet-engined version of the Avro Tudor, which was a funny kind of airplane because again it was a conversion of the Lancaster using a commercial type of fuselage, still with a tail wheel undercarriage.
At the same time Avro was designing pure jet engines since we started out with the Chinook as a sort of trial run and then built the Orenda engine which, by the standard of those days, was a very modern design.
I think that if Avro Canada had retained the Jetliner program until their military production was going smoothly, Avro might very well still be in business today in the commercial field.
