It was clearly based on the successful wartime Avro Lancaster bomber, one of Chadwick's designs and the Lancaster derivative the Avro Lincoln, which was the then current ASW aircraft.
Avro was a British aircraft manufacturer, well known for planes such as the Avro Lancaster which served in World War II.
The Avro Shackleton AEW 2 was developed from the Shackleton Maritime Patrol aircraft, itself derived from the Avro Lancaster bomber which saw widespread use in World War Two.

On 11 February 1953, a story on the project was leaked to the Toronto Star along with images of the Omega design, apparently in order to gain further funding (a strategy widely employed in the US at the time, known as policy by press release).
Avro was convinced that the concept was still workable, and proposed a new program for major rework of the propulsion and control system.
The Avro VZ-9-AV Avrocar was a "dead end" in VTOL design, according to Russell Lee, curator at the National Air and Space Museum, yet its technological innovations have intrigued other designers.

 Saunders-Roe SR.53 Information
The SR-53 itself was a sleek aircraft with a sharply pointed nose, delta-like wing, and a T-tail.
By September 1953 the programme to develop these aircraft came under scrutiny due to cost cuts, and the Avro 720 was abandoned, although it seemed almost ready to fly at this point.
One of the reasons for preferring the SR.53 was although the aircraft was developmentally behind, its use of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidiser was viewed as less problematic than the Avro 720's use of liquid oxygen.

The Canadian government started talking saucers with Avro Aircraft Limited, which had initiated a disk design program it called Project Y. Avro was an offshoot of the British firm A. Roe and Company, a member of the Hawker Siddeley Group.
The goal was to combine the mobility and maneuverability of a jeep and a helicopter, without the former’s vulnerability to rough terrain or the latter’s awkwardness around ground-based structures.
After assembling a prototype, Avro engineers dropped the “Viper 6” plan in favor of one having three Continental J69 turbojets within the hull, pointed at turbine blades around the edge of a central fan.
