Avro was a British aircraft manufacturer, well known for planes such as the Avro Lancaster which served in World War II.
A twin turboprop airliner, the Avro 748, was developed during the 1950s and sold widely across the globe, powered by two Rolls Royce Dart engines.
The Royal Flight of the United Kingdom bought a few and a variant with a rear-loading ramp and a "kneeling" main undercarriage was sold to the RAF and several members of The Commonwealth as the Andover, named after a town in Hampshire.

Avro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Avro Manchester, Lancaster, Lincoln and post-war Vulcan bombers were particularly famous Avro designs.
The older Avro York was somewhat more successful in both the RAF and in commercial service, being distinguished by a fuselage square in cross-section.
When the company was absorbed into Hawker Siddeley Aviation in July 1963 the Avro name seemed to have disappeared forever but the brand had such a strong heritage appeal that the marketing name "Avro RJ" (regional jet) was applied to the British Aerospace 146 from 1994 to 2001.

NLS - Lancasters After The War
The Avro York was designed as a long-range transport aircraft and employed the same wings, undercarriage, and engines as the Lancaster.
The York played a major role in the "Berlin Air Lift" of 1948 when the Soviet Union cut off land access to what was then the former German capital and the Allies flew in some 2,500,000 tons of supplies.
So the Avro Lancaster, which played such a pivotal role during World War II, was part of a long lineage spanning some six decades which began with the Manchester design of 1936 and continued until the last flight of the Shackleton in the late 1980's.

Testing The Avro Jetliner   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
While in England and at Avro's, we flew the jet-engined version of the Avro Tudor, which was a funny kind of airplane because again it was a conversion of the Lancaster using a commercial type of fuselage, still with a tail wheel undercarriage.
At the same time Avro was designing pure jet engines since we started out with the Chinook as a sort of trial run and then built the Orenda engine which, by the standard of those days, was a very modern design.
I think that if Avro Canada had retained the Jetliner program until their military production was going smoothly, Avro might very well still be in business today in the commercial field.

With his strong vision and personality, and with the support of several politicians M. Abou Haidar was able to circumvent the legal obstacles that prevented the transfer of that license, and TMA was able to carry out its own independent operations using a fleet of 2 Avro Yorks on July 24th 1956.
While continuing to fly charters for ARAMCO, TMA (amidst strong opposition from MEA and, ironically Air Liban) was able to obtain the license for operating scheduled cargo operations in 1959 and to initiate such services to Frankfurt, Baghdad and Teheran using a Douglas DC-4 recently added to the fleet.
The airline's safety record was questionnable during these first years of operation; as many as 4 of its aircraft (1 Avro York and 3 DC4s) were lost in successive crashes between 1961 and 1963.
