Awake (Dream Theater album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Awake is a 1994 album from progressive metal band Dream Theater.
It is much darker and heavier than their previous studio album, and is the last album to feature keyboardist Kevin Moore.
Each song is a separate index on the CD, and Dream Theater treat them as individual songs at, for example, live concerts.

Awake by Dream Theater (lyrics & reviews)
Dream Theater may very well not appeal to all, and it is hard for me to attempt a recommendation here: rest assured if you enjoy rock and metal and do not feel uncomfortable with a measure of intelligence adhering to music then this band is well worth the time to investigate.
Dream Theater, though they possess many of the same characteristics as these bands, still manage to maintain a human element in their music.
Awake is at times self-indulgent and pompous, but songs like "Lie," a passionate crusher that finds guitarist John Petrucci launching riff after thunderous riff in a cacophonous volley of crunch, ring true with real passion and base emotion.

In fact, Dream Theater has probably been able to remain with their major label (Elektra Records, also home to Metallica and Pantera) all of these years because of the ability to expand the audience-base.
The rest of the album consists of a variety of heavy guitar and slammin’ bass, alongside the quality vocals and keys you expect, and the highlight of every Dream Theater album, phenomenal drumming.
This is the style of Dream Theater I prefer, and while I know not all of their fans will be onboard, fans of their older, heavier albums, like me, will be stoked.

DREAM THEATER Awake reviews and MP3
Overall this album is produced well and is a delight for metal fans of the first two albums yet it continues the brilliant prog sound which follows on from the previous album.
DREAM THEATER seems to be one of those bands whose works you either love or you hate, and this album I definitely love.
Scarred is the epic of the album, and it's probably the weakest epic Dream Theater has done (next to Honor Thy Father), a pretty bland rhythm and melody is augmented with pretty weak lyrics and vocals.

This album did not grab me as quickly as "Images and Words" or "Scenes from a Memory", but I've stuck with it, and though I still prefer those two albums (and I think the "sellout" album, "Falling into Infinity", may be a bit better as well), this is an excellent piece of music.
And while "Awake" simply falls under the category of most DT fans as "just another album", not being their most famous or their most "progressive", it is, in my opinion, quite possibly their greatest work, and that's a bold statement to make.
Keeping in form with the rest of the album, the closer is a creepy song that Kevin wrote, and one that the band refuses to play live since he is no longer with the band.

 Octavarium by Dream Theater CD
As the sole major-label progressive-metal act, Dream Theater invariably set the standard as the flagship band of the genre.
OCTAVARIUM chiefly finds Dream Theater stepping back from elaborate fretboard acrobatics, focusing on vocal-based, song-oriented material ("I Walk Beside You," "The Answer Lies Within"); much in the spirit of AWAKE and their breakthrough album IMAGES AND WORDS.
Twenty years since their inception, Dream Theater prevails as the benchmark of modern prog metal.
