 Filmtracks: Wide Awake (Edmund Choi)
Wide Awake was produced by an orchestra of 90 players, as well as the full American Boychoir, and the resulting sound seems oddly overblown for the film.
Wide Awake: (Edmund Choi) In one of his first and few solo scoring efforts for a feature film, Edmund Choi employs a large orchestra and choir for a comedy children's genre film.
Then again, if you're a pure orchestral film music fan, you'll likely believe that a large orchestral and choral score could work in practically any film, and if you are such a person, Wide Awake might open your eyes.

 Review: Wide Awake
While it's true that the script for Wide Awake isn't all that ambitious, too often relies on the exposition of an overly-verbose narrator, and includes a few necessary contrivances, what makes the film special are the numerous individual moments that shine.
In this age of cynicism, it's unusual to find a film like Wide Awake.
Wide Awake is a smoother, more polished movie with a less porous emotional texture, a better-realized story, and more fully-rounded characters.

The film has an impressive cast- Denis Leary and Dana Delany portray his doctor/parents and Robert Loggia plays the boy's grandfather through a series of flashbacks, but even they can't help the film find an audience.
There was a lot of effort wasted in this film.
The children this movie is supposedly geared for will be bored, and adults such as myself ( ok, stop laughing), will find it difficult to accept the moralizing of a child under 10.

The Mystical Movie Guide: Our Movie Nights
The woman's spiritual journey is inspiringly realistic, and with its OBE-triggered enlightenment the film is comparable to that Ellen Burstyn classic of NDE awakening "Resurrection" (1980).
The film is a bit dry and arty, depicting the difficulties of staying awake (in the Buddhist sense of being spiritually awake, and hopefully not just to put us asleep).
This film is the story of Russian mystic George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff (1877-1949), based on his autobiography of the same title, and focussing on Gurdjieff's formative early years of travelling central Asia in search of spiritual answers.

 WIDE AWAKE
An interesting project that's moderately successful, "Wide Awake" is seemingly stuck in genre limbo and may have a hard time attracting an audience who won't be sure what the movie's really about.
The film has its occasional touching moments, such as Joshua always wanting it to snow since that's what his grandfather earlier stated was proof of God's existence, and when Joshua finally accepts an eager, overweight boy as his friend.
While the "too old for his years" dialogue slightly undermines the film's efforts, it still comes across as a decent little production.

 CLASSIC FILMS AND FILM STARS
The film's most memorable sequence (one which Preminger must have been awake for) has an old lady nurse trying to strangle a deathly ill Wilde so that she can steal his watch; this culminates in a rousing cat-fight between Darnell and the feisty old woman, who winds up strangled to death by her younger adversary.
While most of the film isn't remotely scary and has little atmosphere, the scene when she's left alone in the house is quite eerie and well done, and her subsequent encounter with Montgomery is extremely effective and well-acted.
Despite Hitchcock's unusual approach to filming (he shot the entire picture in ten minute takes with only one actual cut), the fluid camera work keeps this interesting on the visual level, and it is not for an instant boring.

 Amazon.co.uk: Swordfish [2001]: DVD
The plot takes twists and turns (especially in the middle of the film, where they're really effective), and you have to be awake to follow it - it's no "Die Hard" (where you can sleep through part of it, and still know what's happening).
The numerous explosions and set-piece exchanges of high calibre gunfire tend at times to blowholes in the narrative fabric and sense of Swordfish, a film that nonetheless engages through its extravagant silliness.
Vinnie Jones is under-used as a fearsome minder, a close-up of Halle Berry's breasts isn't entirely integral to the plotline, while Travolta enjoys himself as the dapper ringmaster of this orgy of techno-chaos, especially in scenes in which he blasts away a brace of pursuing assassins with improbable aplomb and during his opening, Tarantino-esque monologue.

Christian Century: Fogged in. . - Film - Insomnia - movie review
The only wide-awake acting in Insomnia comes from Hilary Swank, who plays the novice small-town cop who idolizes Dormer but is clever enough to work out the truth.
GRIMLY PURPOSEFUL, with barely a shadow of humor, Insomnia is one of those post-Seven thrillers that's so puffed up with its own importance that it doesn't feel it has to bother to be entertaining.
The role is a cliche that Swank sidesteps neatly by playing it moment by moment, with the unconventional combination of wonder and quick reflexes that she brings to both large roles (Boys Don't Cry) and small (The Gift).
