Ben Lee - Awake Is The New Sleep [2005] :: btBeat.com :: because music should never be harmless   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
That alone would have made Awake Is the New Sleep noteworthy, but what makes it stand alongside Something to Remember Me By as his strongest album is that he's written a strong, melodic set of songs and Wood has given them a colorful but unadorned production that gives each tune its own character.
Whatever was true then, ‘Awake Is The New Sleep’ is the least pretentious record I have heard in some time.
While ‘Awake…’ has its fair share of moments that make you blush on first listen, each of the 14 songs sink in after a few spins and what’s left is the impression of a young man finally growing into himself both musically and emotionally.

"Sleep requirements and patterns change throughout life, but sleep problems in the elderly are not a normal part of aging," says Julie Gammack, M.D., assistant professor of geriatrics at Saint Louis University, and an author of a review published in the American Journal of Medicine.
"Sleep disturbance in the elderly is associated with decreased memory, impaired concentration and impaired ability to function.
She suggests patients with sleep problems keep a diary for a week or two that includes tracking usual wake-up and bedtimes, timing and size of meals, amount of exercise, medications and descriptions of how much and how restful sleep was each day.

While much of the album is upbeat, a few of the songs on Awake Is the New Sleep take on a noirish late-night feel, brooding in the shadows of the bright ones.
Somewhat of a shakedown cruise for Wood's new recording environment, the timing was right for Ben Lee to stop by with a fresh batch of songs.
The lyrical flow of Awake Is the New Sleep is a steady stream of the kind of hindsight analysis and questioning of self that comes on strong as one slowly morphs from teen to adult.

The new black - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"_____ is the new fl" is a catch phrase used to indicate the sudden popularity or versatility of an idea at the expense of the popularity of a second idea.
She declared that "Pink is the new fl", meaning that the color pink seemed to be the foundation of the attire there, much like fl was the base color of most ensembles in New York.
The phrase is also often generalised to "_____ is the new _____", where the standard may be almost anything ("the new rock 'n' roll" is a common variant).

Another sturdy (yet hip) cultural touchstone is the expression “X is the new X”—as in the title of Ben Lee’s new CD, Awake Is the New Sleep.
And yet, with both albums and their different flavors of childlike harmlessness—the self-regarding, good-natured irony of the Riot Nrrrd, the glad and big preadolescence of Ben Lee—what’s missing is the astonishment of discovery, the genuine feelings of childhood, with its emotional storms and mad energy.
Although their once-brash newness has coalesced into a sort of arrested development, both TMBG and Ben Lee are skilled crafters of witty, self-aware pop.

Awake is Lee's post-break-up record (he got dumped by famed actress Clare Danes) and tracks like "Begin" and the title track all centre around the idea that there's more to life than chasing some girl.
It also helps that Awake is oozing with upbeat melodies and warm sing a-long poetry made perfect for pop radio.

Awake is a distinctly flawed album; much of what's here is precious or forced-sounding.
Not that Awake is wholly unappealing: "Ache For You", for instance, is an understated pop gem with a sweetly effective chorus.
From the abortive hooks that are left, orphaned, at various points on Awake, it's easy to see that Lee still has an ear for a melody.
