Amazon.com: Awake: Music: Dream Theater   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Awake is at times self-indulgent and pompous, but songs like "Lie," a passionate crusher that finds guitarist John Petrucci launching riff after thunderous riff in a cacophonous volley of crunch, ring true with real passion and base emotion.
As I said before, this is not a Dream Theater album for beginners, because of how heavy it is, but even if it is a first, you may might like it in the end.
This album did not grab me as quickly as "Images and Words" or "Scenes from a Memory", but I've stuck with it, and though I still prefer those two albums (and I think the "sellout" album, "Falling into Infinity", may be a bit better as well), this is an excellent piece of music.

 Dream Theater Biography
Awake, Dream Theater's third studio album, was released in October 1994 in a hail of controversy among established fans.
Despite the album containing some very progressive-sounding songs, tracks like Hollow Years and You Not Me prompted some to believe it was the dawn of a new, mainstream-sounding Dream Theater, just as the release of Empire had previously heralded the same shift for Queensrÿche.
The new album, Octavarium, was released on June 7, 2005.

DREAM THEATER Awake review by frenchie(Christopher French)
The two previous albums flowed like a dream but this album is where the nightmare starts to kick in with its heavy edge and dark lyrics.
Overall this album is produced well and is a delight for metal fans of the first two albums yet it continues the brilliant prog sound which follows on from the previous album.
Mike Portnoy is probably more of a highlight on this album as he offers intense drum work throughout the heavier sections of the album yet manages to keep up the good work for the mellower parts, which is more familiar to Images and Words.

Well, it would be had they just appeared on the scene, but Awake is pretty much the same album as their 1998 debut.
Sully's Wiccan background also lays the foundation for most of the album, as it did on the previous one, with hints of witchcraft and voodoo reflected in almost all of the lyrics.
Awake is a good album for the current state of music, but it lacks in creativity and motivation.

DREAM THEATER Awake reviews and MP3
Generally speaking, the 'Awake' repertoire is fiercer and fierier than its predecessor's: the sound is more aggressive, the performances are penetrated by a harder edge, a big deal of the guitar riffs and solos are quite sombre, at times even openly belligerent.
Awake offers to us 11 songs, when we can find everything from powerful metal songs to a rockish ballad, and here are my favorite points, only mentioning that the first song 6:00 has always caught my attention because of the keyboard sound at the beginning of it, but actually i dont really like it.
This is Moore's second contribution to the album, and it is similar to "6:00" in that it employs a deceptively swinging vocal melody that sheds more light on his disenfranchisement and growing paranoia (at least, as far Awake being a narrative in my own mind).

This album is definitely weird with botched attempts at synthetic effects, but halfway through the album smoothens out.

Awake is the heaviest thing I've heard from Dream Theater so far (although I haven't heard the last two albums), and for my money it's also their most interesting CD from a prog point of view.
Awake is perhaps the band's heaviest outing, but also the album of theirs with the most subtleties.
