Topic: Awakening (ENT episode)

In the News (Thu 31 Dec 09)

Ent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In this meaning of the word, Ents are one of the staples of fantasy and folklore/mythology, alongside wizards, knights, princesses, and dragons, although modern English-speakers would probably not call them by their traditional name.
Ents were envisioned as Shepherds of the Trees, to protect the forests from Orcs, Dwarves and other perils.
Tolkien later noted that the destruction of Isengard by the Ents was based on his disappointment in Macbeth; when "Birnham Wood is come to castle Dunsinane", Tolkien was less than thrilled that it amounted to men walking on stage with leaves in their hats.

Toward the end of "Awakening", T'Pol holds her mother T'Les in her arms on Vulcan.
The events of this episode (The Vulcan head-of-state attempting to convince his people that a false weapons-of-mass-destruction conspiracy exists in an opposing governmental power, Andoria) seem to mirror American President George W. Bush's call for a strike into Iraq in the early 21st century.
This is the final episode of the series directed by Roxann Dawson.

ST Universe Episode Review - Enterprise | Season 4 | Awakening
Although this episode slows down the pace significantly from the opener of this mini-arc, this allows the characters time to reflect on what has happened so far, as well as giving the viewer time to get to know the new characters introduced.
With his involvement in the plot to frame and eradicate the Syrranites, and then as the episode progressed, his willingness to prevent Enterprise from reaching the planet's service, V'Las is in danger of crossing the line between a believable and misguided villain and a two-dimensional “bad guy”.
Although it lacked the shock and impact that Forest 's death had (she was, after all, a relatively new and minor character), her death is doubtlessly going to have consequences in future episodes, and T'Pol's initial reaction to her mother's death was a painfully believable attempt to suppress her understandable grief.

ENTERPRISE - DETAILS OF 'Awakening', EPISODE 084
The Syrrannites, with a young T'Pau at helms, claim to embrace the true teachings of Surak — the father of Vulcan philosophy who instigated the Time of Awakening almost 2000 years ago — but Archer and T'Pol are highly skeptical of their professions of pacifism.
Meanwhile, Trip Tucker is in command of Enterprise, and with Ambassador Soval's help, contends with an obstinate leader of the Vulcan High Command V'Las whose campaign against the Syrrannites could endanger the captain and first officer.
Notes : 2nd of the 3 episodes of the mini-series dedicated to Vulcan's forge, as a reminder of the original series (Amok Time) and the animated series (Yesteryear).

Ex Astris Scientia - Star Trek Enterprise (ENT) Season 4
We are also looking at the worst time travel episode ever, one where the sudden temporal dislocation is essentially just an excuse to let the brave crew fight against evil aliens and Nazis and then magically return to their own century.
The episode was littered with references to Trek history, plus several new terms like "Augments" or "Borderland", and it might have been wiser to limit the scope to just Earth's problem with the remnants of the Eugenics Wars.
This loss of intellectual substance is a shortcoming of the episode, along with the overdose of violence, although the latter contributes to the plot in that it divides Soong and his "children".

All later episodes without exception assume only moderate advances in propulsion technology in the early 21st century, in a way that interstellar travel, no matter if with sleeper ships or with the new technology, wouldn't be feasible until the invention of warp drive.
It could be that the Vulcans helped launch the Conestoga, but the episode made it clear that the humans did it on their own.
The inhabitants of Argelius II undergo a great awakening, a significant cultural milestone in their hedonistic society devoted to love and pleasure (TOS: "Wolf in the Fold").

UPN has altered this Friday's schedule: Two episodes of "The Mullets" will be repeated from 7-8pm CT/MT (8-9pm ET/PT), and the pilot episode of "Jake 2.0" will be repeated from 8-9pm CT/MT (9-10pm ET/PT).
Based on the current tentative schedule, the twelfth episode will air on November 26; based on the filming schedule thus far (7 to 8 filming days per episode), the twelfth episode will finish filming at the end of October or perhaps early November.
Assuming all remaining episodes are repeated only once, the season premiere would air tentatively September 17, but it's possible there will be additional repeat airings which would keep it on September 24.

Surak died in the 4th century C.E. (based upon Earth's calendar, approximately 1,800 years before the events of the Star Trek: Enterprise episode "Awakening"), apparently of radiation poisoning caused by a nuclear-like battle that devastated Vulcan.
The episode was called "The Savage Curtain" and Barry Atwater played a recreation of Surak devised by aliens.
The character's second appearance was in the 2004 episode of Star Trek: Enterprise entitled "Awakening" in which he was played by Bruce Gray.

I think that I'll stop watching the episodes, (it's actually painful to see them destroy a wonderful franchise) and keep reading your scathing reviews on the subject.

 Dead Stop
There was not near enough time in this episode to unfold the mother/daughter relationship with T'Les and T'Pol much like what was developed between the Sarek and Spock father/son drama.
Given the overall story theme, it seemed as though T'Pau should be taken at center stage as an important and strong character.
However, this and the previous episode has built up V'Las as a focal character with a head-on collision with Archer.

If Awakening was half a step down from The Forge, then Kir'Shara is half a step down from awakening.
There's nothing particularly wrong with the episode as such, but it's really a pretty by-the-numbers affair.
The Andorian end of things wasn't really telegraphed in advance given that it was only introduced at the very end of Awakening, but it too was played out in a pretty straightforward way - Trip warns the Andorians, they intercept the Vulcans and spoil the surprise attack.
