THE AWAKENING OF FAITH IN MAHAYANA (Mahayana-Sraddhotpada Shastra)
Because of this faith a man comes to meditate on them always, to draw near to them in fellowship, to honor them, and to respect them, developing his capacity for goodness and seeking after the all-embracing knowledge.
Even if a man practices faith, because he is greatly hindered by the evil karma derived from the grave sins of previous lives, he may be troubled by the evil Tempter (Mara) and his demons, or entangled in all sorts of worldly affairs, or afflicted by the suffering of disease.
But those who are skeptical, who lack faith, who speak ill of the teaching of the Buddha, who have committed grave sins, who are hindered by their evil karma, or who are arrogant or indolent are to be excluded; these people are incapable of being absorbed into the samadhi of Suchness.

 The Awakening of Faith
Purporting to be a translation from an earlier Sanskrit version written by Asvagosha, The Awakening of Faith has had a huge influence on Mahayana ("great vehicle") Buddhism in East Asia, and is held in high esteem by schools as diverse as Zen, Kegon, Shingon and Pure Land.
Whatever its origins (and the intriguing possibility that it is a Chinese "forgery" cannot be completely dismissed) The Awakening of Faith is a remarkable work: a concise yet thorough tutorial on Indian Mahayana thought in its most refined form, laid out in logical sequence from theoretical basics to practical realisation.
The Awakening of Faith is predicated on the notion of a single unconditional Absolute, referred to by various terms including "suchness" and "Buddha-nature", that intersects the world of the senses.

In the esoteric interpretation, the afflictive hindrances are explained in terms of six kinds of defiled mind as taught in the Awakening of Faith, while the noetic hindrances are explained in terms of their relation to innate ignorance.
Also, the definition of the noetic hindrances as being that which prevents a proper apprehension of the natural world of karma is rather unusual, as the nature of their obstruction is usually not given such a narrow limitation.
In this definition, the cognitive and karmic aspect of the noetic and afflictive hindrances are clearly distinguished, as well as their relative subtlety and coarseness, and the role that the noetic hindrances play as the source of the afflictive hindrances.

The Awakening of Faith in Mahayana (henceforth: Awakening) became one of the most important texts of the Buddhist tradition of Eastern Asia (China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam); it exerted an extremely powerful influence on the process of formatting the Far Eastern Buddhist schools (such as Tiantai, Huayan and Chan / Zen) and their doctrinal teachings.
According to the Awakening, the cause of evil and of the samsaric cyclical existence with all its sufferings originates from the unenlightened aspect of Absolute (Suchness as luminous One Mind), which has a secondary and accidental nature but nevertheless is responsible for all defilements and attachments of the empirical consciousness of the sentient beings.
In Awakening the samsaric beings, because of the influence of their substantial original Buddha nature, attain Enlightenment which leads to the complete elimination of the non-enlightened fl dot inside the Absolute, and its complete Enlightenment.

For Dogen, genjokoan is none other than Prajna, or "intuitive wisdom." Furthermore, Dogen is in accord with the Mahayana tradition in arguing that Prajna and Karuna, "compassion, the Golden Purifier" are "not-two." He also holds to the traditional Mahayana conception of right moral action as proceeding from Prajna/Karuna.
At the same time this sitting is entered into in the faith that it will one day culminate in the sudden and direct perception of the true nature of this Mind-- in other words, Enlightenment.
Such an attitude reveals not only a lack of faith in the judgment of one's teacher but a fundamental misconception of both the nature and the difficulty of Shikan-taza, not to mention the teaching methods employed in Soto temples and monasteries.
