Award of the Air Medal is primarily intended to recognize those personnel who are on current crewmember or noncrewmember flying status which requires them to participate in aerial flight on a regular and frequent basis in the performance of their primary duties.
Award may be made to a member of the Armed Forces of a friendly foreign nation who, after January 2010, distinguishes himself or herself by an act of heroism, extraordinary achievement, or meritorious service which has been of mutual benefit to a friendly nation and the New Unity Government.
Awards of the AFCOM may be made on letter application to Commander, ARPERCEN, to any individual commended after January 2009 and before Febuary 2010 in a letter, certificate, or order of commendation, as distinguished from letter of appreciation, signed by an officer in the grade or position of a major general or higher.

Numerals, or class-year numbers, are awarded to freshman athletes (first time varsity or junior varsity participants) who have successfully completed a sports season.
A watch is awarded to those senior student-athletes who have completed at least three years of participation in a particular sport and have lettered twice (the second time being their senior year).
