Red Ribbon Week is an annual anti-drug event to educate individuals, families and communities on the destructive effects of drugs, while highlighting the positive alternatives that are available.
Red Ribbon Week began in 1985 after Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique Camarena was kidnapped and killed in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Citizens from the slain officer's hometown of Calexico, Calif., began wearing red ribbons to remember his death and to commemorate his sacrifice.

 The Army National Guard
The awards will be given out on Oct. 24, as a part of Red Ribbon week, which is dedicated to anti-drug education and drug abuse awareness.
Nominations for both awards are to be submitted to the secretary of the Army or chief of the National Guard Bureau, who will then forward the nominations to the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Counternarcotics by June 1.
The Fulcrum Shield Award, which was first presented in 2001, is given to a youth organization in each of the Services, National Guard, and the Defense agencies that best promotes the anti-drug message in its community.

In the style of the yellow ribbons, which were popular in the USA at the time as a symbol for awareness of those soldiers fighting in the gulf war, the Red Ribbon was born.
In Germany, the Red Ribbon was first made known to the public during the ZDF Pop Show which was broadcasted all over Europe by German TV station ZDF in December 1993.
