In the German armed forces, decorations were awarded according to merits, without regard to the rank of the servicemen.
These awards could be earned in several ways, from having served on a number of missions, to being involved in a particularly successful mission, to acts of bravery and gallantry.
The German Medals and Awards presented here are categorized into two sections; general decorations awarded to all organizations of the armed forces, and those that were specific to the U-boat arm.

The rest of the lesser ranks simply returned to the chaos that was post-war Germany or other countries, and thus were not formally charged (due to the large numbers of them- the SS) and simply returned to civilian life.

Hoping to trigger a revolution amidst socialist elements in Germany, a young Dutch communist set fire to the Reichstag on 27 February 1933, two days after trying to burn down the Imperial Palace in Berlin.
This event gave the Nazis an excuse to act against the thousands of anarchists, socialists and communists scattered throughout the Reich (many were sent to Dachau), thus removing political dissidents.
Thousands were shipped daily to extermination camps (Vernichtungslager, sometimes called "death factories") and concentration camps (Konzentrationslager, KZ), some of which were originally detention centers but later converted into death camps for the purpose of killing of their inmates.
