ROOTS MANUVA - Awfully Deep   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Awfully Deep sees Smith once again revel in intense vocal deliveries, which flicker with a lighthearted blend of sarcasm and dark humour, refreshingly divorced from the tiresome fake posturing of his across-the-Atlantic rivals.
Meanwhile, the commercial groove and humourous lyrical brilliance of The Falling could be a massive smash hit, and is one of the most enjoyable tracks on the album, but I still can’t pinpoint where that great bass line is snatched from.
Awfully Deep can’t fail to pick up a raft of awards this year.

Roots Manuva: Awfully Deep (2005): Reviews
Awfully Deep is another strong release for Smith, and while it doesn’t sport the effortless flow of his debut or the rich variety of Run Come Save Me, its considered assessment of where he’s been and where he might be heading helps the album more than live up to its title.
Awfully Deep, on the whole, is a bold, ambitious swing for the fences.
Awfully Deep, is an awfully good third album.

Guardian | Roots Manuva, Awfully Deep   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Awfully Deep is in part a record of what seems to have been a strange, dark time since Smith last released an album.
But, from the title onwards, the glorious Britishness of this music is manifested in Smith's light self-deprecation: his swagger is free of the dreary machismo of so much US rap.
Refreshingly, Awfully Deep isn't awfully long, or littered with skits and cameos (the musical equivalent of buying a pork sausage and discovering it's only 3% meat).

If you've read any of the speculation surrounding Awfully Deep, you'll be aware that this is the down album from beleaguered Brit-Jamaican rapper Roots Manuva, a troubled work where he battles with the twin demons of depression and mental illness.
Compare "The Falling" which is a deep, dark look at the hard negative times in his life, to "Chin High" which is full of heavy jungle style beats and shows his positive approach.
The high points are awfully deep, the falling, toothbrush and a haunting, buy this if you liked his new singles.

 BigYawn.net :: Roots Manuva :..: Awfully Deep
Awfully Deep remains a hip hop album all the way through despite having so many different sounds.
He is conscious and a little greedy at the same time, and has tracks about everything from women to killing, giving him the ability to appeal to a wide audience.
On his most recent album, Awfully Deep, Roots Manuva declares, "this could well be my last LP, I've had a good run, I’ve made a few G’s." To that I say, lets hope it’s not his last album.

 Awfully Deep - Roots Manuva - - - -
The album Awfully Deep has a more finished sound than we usually hear from rap on this side of the Atlantic.
Tracks like Colossal Insight and the title track Awfully Deep have an electronic sound that uses all the basic sound effects found in old skool jungle and cheap toy guns to refreshed ends.
The subject matter on Awfully Deep occasionally suffers from the ego that inevitably arises from a one-man show pushed forward as the leader of a genre.

Big Dada Roots Manuva - Awfully De/EP
Roderick Manuva returns with a blood ‘n’ thunder EP inspired by but not totally in thrall to the magnificent “Awfully Deep” album, now MOBO-nominated and generally agreed to have been a very surprising omission from the Mercury shortlist.
Awfully De/EP kicks off with a brand new track, “Seat Yourself,” a Manuva produced, crazed banger of a beat, the kind of off-kilter madness that works as soon as you hear it and then works even more with every repeat listen.
Having tried out a couple of thrashed out punk versions of the tune, Albarn sat down at the piano and started pumping out some wonky Clayderman, the band fell in with him and this marvellously downbeat, deadpan re-work was born.

AWFULLY DEEP - ROOTS MANUVA - AWFULLY DEEP - BIG DADA - -
The verse, catchy-as-the-plague chorus, verse structure is still in evidence, though, and a certain 'pop' (for want of a better word) sensibility is evident from the off.
"Awfully Deep" follows up, coming across as a serious pillage of old skool rave soundbanks blended with the kind of introspective vocal we've come to expect from Roots.
In fact, in places "Awfully Deep" is absolutely nothing to do with hip-hop and there are a handful of cuts here that will probably be a notch too far outside the average B-Boy's frame of reference for comfort.

Blogcritics.org: Roots Manuva - Awfully Deep   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Awfully Deep, his third studio set, finds Manuva in fine, albeit none more dark, form.
Ostensibly the soundtrack to one man's neuroses, channelling the angst, self doubt and depression that stemmed from his recent brush with low-grade fame, it all comes to a spectacular head on the pitch fl psychosis of the title track.
Brooding and brilliant, Awfully Deep is packed full of skanking dub and dancehall beats shot through with a lyrical dexterity and inventiveness missing from the recent rap scene.

BBC - Urban Review - Roots Manuva, Awfully Deep
Awfully Deep may be an astounding hybrid of calypso, drum 'n' bass, breakbeat, electro, grime and hip hop, all heavily flavoured with dub.
I can't wait until its released, colossal insight is actually "awfully deep"...but we all like that.
It sounds really deep and no matter how "commercial" or "mainstreem" the musical layers are, what is really critical is that it anderstandible and hence his message is clear

Big Dada Roots Manuva - Awfully Deep   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
When Roots Manuva called his album “Awfully Deep” he wasn’t necessarily talking about how profound it was or how profound he was.
It’s also his most ‘dubwise’ record to date, the cavernous echoes adding further dimensions, the “barrage of bass,” as ever, as deep as it comes.
But “Awfully Deep” is also Smith’s most lyrically consistent offering, a clear theme developing even in amongst the hip hop boasting and JA soundbwoy murderation toasting.

Roots Manuva - Awfully Deep - Review - Stylus Magazine
Sonically Roots Manuva has never been about straight forward hip hop, and Awfully Deep is no exception, maintaining his passion for the intricate, claustrophobic sounds of dub and electronica, but focussing the grooves and tunes tighter than they’ve ever been before.
Placing the album’s titular and most harrowing track second is a bold move, colouring perceptions for the rest of the album, laying things on the line early.
Although Roots Manuva maintains the sense of humour and absurd, parochial lyrical turns he has become known for, Awfully Deep is littered with unsettling juxtapositions.

I’m just an awfully deep kind of guy.” It’s his most crafted, most accomplished album, an improvement that he attributes to relaxing and ceasing to worry about creating radio tunes or club tunes or whatever and also ceasing to worry about about not creating them.

 IGN: Awfully Deep Review
Awfully Deep builds on that proven magnetism with a musical expansion that results in Manuva's richest effort to date.
Stateside listeners may have trouble adjusting to Manuva's slow, methodic delivery, but anyone familiar with his work - or UK hip-hop in general - will feel right at home within the atmosphere created by his booming deadpan.
With Awfully Deep, Manuva demands more than a superficial brush over, elevating his musical concoctions to a complexity that requires multiple listens to fully absorb.

Its this flagrant disregard for pigeonholing that has always made his music unique and interesting and here, on his third album, this boundless creativity reaches its peak.
Awfully Deep takes Manuvas unparalleled linguistic ingenuity and matches it with backdrops that draw in virtually every strain of fl British music from the last twenty years, albeit with the unshakeable influence of Jamaica always at the fore.
From the unsettling strains of A Haunting and the paranoia of The Falling and the dancefloor-friendliness of Colossal Insight and Mind 2 Motion, this is the most complete work yet from a man whose every release reinforces his position as the UKs absolute finest.

The experience Manuva has shows up the new school for the flashes in the pan they may well prove to be.
Awfully Deep is a definite benchmark for UK hip hop and the Big Dada label, who were brave enough to set out on this path well before anyone was inclined to look twice in their direction.
For individuality translated into a seamless gift, Awfully Deep shows just how it's done.

The title track’s Trickyesque, but the drums are limpid and the hook inane: “Things are getting awfully deep / Awfully deep, I can’t get no sleep.” Yes, that’s the hook; those words are repeated multiple times.
Manuva’s stuck between a rave and a hard place, where his aging introspection looks to slip some rufies of pseudo-philosophy into the cocktails of a lost demographic; under the waving glowsticks Awfully Deep creeps, calling itself more intelligent and mature while breaking out a few gimpy dance moves.
It delivers a beat of NES-sophistication and an altar call.

Roots Manuva - Awfully Deep : album review
It looks as if Roots Manuva had to travel through some kind of personal hell in the making of this album, and the fact he's emerged the other side with a grin and sense of humour still intact says much about the strength of his personality.
It doesn't get much lighter on Too Cold, the slow footstep of the bassline vividly evoking the onset of old age, as Roots' voice reaches new depths of register.
Musically, Awfully Deep is a melting pot of styles, repeated listening revealing textures with the odd flute stab here, a subtle trumpet line there.

On Awfully Deep, Roots Manuva sets the controls for the dark heart of creativity, fame and the U.K. fl experience, his hazy brand of subconscious hip-hop snapping into focus on the psychotically honest title track and bitterly sarcastic note to self, "Colossal Insight." Smith’s tracks are both banging and self-effacing, yet the two opposite impulses never seem fully at odds with each other.
Whether it’s just refreshing to hear an emcee as unsure of himself as the rest of us or just a matter of impeccable craft, hooks like “sometimes I hate myself / sometimes I love myself” (“Too Cold”) prove awfully sticky.
The beats definitely help the medicine go down, a varied lot even down to the fundamental rhythms.
