Topic: Axel jump

Axel jump - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Axel is a jump in figure skating, named after the Norwegian skater Axel Paulsen (1855-1938) who was the first to perform it in 1882.
When the skater makes a mistake in the timing of the jump such that the blade does not grip at all and he or she slips completely off the edge, the result is what is called a waxel, often resulting in a fall.
Axel Paulsen was the first skater to perform the jump named after him, in 1882.

Glossary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
This is a critical jump in the development of a figure skater because the movements involved in the take-off of this jump are similar to those required for the toe loop and salchow.
To perform an open axel, the skater must be capable of a high jump taken with speed to have time in the air to rotate with his arms and legs open.
For the jump to appear spectacular, it is usually performed as a delayed axel and the skater seems to hesitate for a moment in the air in a tucked posture.

 Singles Short Program Deductions
Jumps are cheated by doing part of the rotation of the jump on the ice either before the takeoff or after the landing.
Jumps cheated on the landing are usually cheated by 1/2 a turn - jumps cheated by 1/4 turn usually result in the skater crashing instead.
Repeating a jump from the jump combination - Jumps used in the jump combination cannot be repeated in the solo jump.

Competitive Figure Skating FAQ: Technical Elements   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
If the jump is approached from an outside three turn and step instead, it's sometimes called a "toe walley"; technically the toe walley is supposed to be done from an inside edge, but otherwise the two jumps are considered equivalent.
toe axel a jump that is supposed to be a double toe loop, but where the skater incorrectly does an axel-like forward takeoff from the toe pick instead of the correct backwards toe-assisted takeoff.
The thing that distinguishes a jump combination from a jump series is that in a combination, there are no intervening steps or turns between the jumps; the landing edge for each jump forms the take-off edge for the next.

AXEL JUMP — One of the most difficult jumps which takes off from the forward outside edge and is landed on the back outside edge of the opposite foot.
A single Axel consists of 1 1/2 revolutions, a double is 2 1/2 revolutions, and a triple is 3-1/2 revolutions.
WALTZ JUMP – A jump involving a half-turn in the air in which the skater takes off from a forward outside edge on one foot and lands on the backward outside edge of the other.

Although there are many different jumps and combinations of jumps done in skating the basic thing that you need to know is that there are three parts to every jump: a take off, a rotation in the air, and a landing.
The different jumps in figure skating are as follows: waltz jump, toe-loop, salchow, loop jump, flip jump, lutz jump, and axel.
The axel is the only exception to this rule because a single axel is in fact one and a half rotations, a double axel is two and a half rotations, and a triple axel is three and a half rotations.

Figure Skating Terminology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The most difficult jump in figure skating is named for its inventor, Axel Paulsen, a Norwegian speed skating champion who became famous as an exhibition and trick skater.
Executing the Axel jump, a skater takes off from an inside edge while skating forward, turns one-and-a-half times in the air (540 degrees), and lands on the back outside edge of the other skate.
This jump is performed without a toe pick assist and is an edge jump in which the skater completes a loop in the air (or two or three), taking off from a backward outside edge and landing on the same back outside edge.

This is now entering the situation where the jump base mark deficit is becoming difficult to overcome by strengths in other areas, and the skater without the triple Axel or quad has to hope their competition will make a significant error.
For a skater with the triple Axel or quad, there is less risk to attempting these jumps than attempting two or three difficult triple-triples, so long as the skater stays on their feet or pops/cheats the jump to only one less rotation.
Because the jump base value increases more by adding a triple Axel or Quad Salchow to the very first example than by adding two or three triple-triple combinations, it may be a more cost effective use of training time to acquire the triple Axel or Quad than to get triple-triple combinations.

I think that skaters shouldn't get distracted from other triple jumps, but I think that there might be LESS chance of injury by doing new single jumps than very difficult triples, quads, and triple-triples.
The toe walley is essentially the same thing as a toe loop except the skater, in theory, jumps off of a right back inside edge instead of a right back outside edge.
In any case, the jumps are virtually the same as far as difficulty goes and are considered interchangeable.
