Topic: Axial flow compressor

Axial compressor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Axial compressors are compressors in which the fluid flows mainly parallel to the rotation axis.
Axial flow compressors have large mass flow capacity and high efficiencies, but have a smaller pressure rise per stage than centrifugal compressors.
Axial compressors are essentially a steam turbine reversed; instead of high-pressure gas flowing into the turbine and forcing it to rotate to provide power, in the compressor role power is provided from an external source in order to spin the system and compress the gas.

Gas compressor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Compressors are loosely related to pumps: both increase the pressure on a fluid and both can transport the fluid through a pipe.
As gases are compressible, the compressor also reduces the volume of a gas, whereas the main result of a pump raising the pressure of a liquid is to allow the liquid to be transported elsewhere.
Air compressors sold to and used by the general public are often attached on top of a tank for holding the pressurized air.

Axial-flow compressor - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The axial flow compressor is an improvement on the centrifugal compressor previously used in turbine engines, though small and micro turbines use centrifugal compressors with relative advantages (in terms of pressure ratios achieveable per stage of compression).
There are then multiple compressor stages, each consisting of a set of rotating blades (much like a propeller) that force the gas to the rear, and then a set of fixed stator blades that condition the air ready for the next compressor stage.
Axial flow compressors are typically used in the compression stage of turbine engines.

Stall prediction method for axial flow compressor - US Patent 6715984   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
A stall prediction method for an axial flow compressor according to claim 1, wherein a plurality of said pressure sensors are disposed in the circumferential direction of the axial flow compressor for obtaining time history data at various positions of one rotor blade.
Since the air flow is least stable in the vicinity of the leading edge of the rotor blade, it is possible to find the smallest change of the air flow and to predict the stall occurrence in advance by providing the pressure sensor adjacent to the leading edge of the rotor blade.
In contrast, since the flow near the leading edge of the rotor blade 12 is most stable, it is desirable for accurate and reliable detection of the indication to dispose the high response pressure sensor adjacent to the leading edge as a position in the axial direction.

Wind Tunnels - Axial Fan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Because it is necessary to return to uniform, non-swirling flow in a circular or polygonal section downstream of the fan, the diameter of the central nacelle ("boss", "hub") is usually a smaller fraction of the fan diameter than in multi-stage compressor practice, and rarely exceeds 0.5 to 0.6 of the fan diameter.
Axial fans have a much more limited operating range (in terms of the pressure-rise coefficient, defined as the ratio of pressure rise through the fan to the dynamic pressure of the flow) than centrifugal blowers.
It must be said that the outlet flow frm a centrifugal blower is disturbed at the best of times, but not much worse than the likely condition of the flow at exit from the main diffuser of a closed-circuit tunnel.

As an approach to the study of supersonic compressors, three possible velocity diagrams are discussed briefly.
In this compressor, air decelerates through the speed of sound in the rotor blading and enters the stators at subsonic speeds.

Rotor or stator blades for an axial flow compressor - Patent 4671738
For these secondary flows to exist, radial pressure gradients must exist along the blades, and these radial pressure gradients are produced by the interaction between the aerofoils and the boundary layer on the outer and inner walls of the flow annulus of the compressor.
This simple relationship, together with the conventional treatment of flows in an axial flow compressor, enable the parameters of the aerofoils to be determined in sequence throughout the compressor.
Since the axial velocity profile in the boundary layer is known theoretically or empirically, the value of Vwgv may be calculated for each element of the aerofoil and hence the camber angle variation of the guide vane aerofoil determined.

Rotor of a compressor, more particularly of an axial-flow compressor - Patent 4671735
The rotor of an axial-flow compressor with means for sealing the rotor blade tips relative to a casing wall provided with a coating is to be capable of abrasion but at the same time also low in wear.
The present invention resolves these contradicting requirements for the coating on the casing in that individual blades, arranged between normally contoured, unshrouded rotor blades, are widened at their tips and reinforced with a radially outer layer, the material of which is matched to that of the coating.
In compressors, especially axial-flow compressors, efficiency and operating behavior depend to a large extent on the ability to keep the width of the radial clearance or gap between the rotor blades and the casing as small as possible.

 DESIGNING A COMPRESSOR
Indeed, centrifugal-flow compressors have a relatively large frontal area due to the size of the impeller, and are therefore much less suitable when air resistance is to be minimised.
Indeed, if there is an excessive amount of air flowing through any one stage of the compressor, the airflow may break down altogether.
This design allows for some of the air discharged by the front compressor to be evacuated, controlling the airflow that is allowed into the rear compressor.

Radial flow vs. axial flow compressor : RC Universe! The Ultimate RC forum   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
With axial compressors you would need several stages to get the same pressure in the combustion-chamber, resulting in a more advanced engine with a lot of high-tec parts (like in the full-size engines), and the cost would reach levels previously unheard of.
In an axial compressor stage, the high and low pressure areas are divided by the compressor disc itself, and the leakage path is between the blade tips and the casing.
So, the smaller you make an axial flow compressor the less efficient it becomes (since the gap between blade tip and casing cannot be reduced in proportion (commercial turbofans have a clearance of less then a milimeter, with blades up to a meter long...).

In fact it is this inherent unsteadiness that enables the flow field and the compressor and turbine blades to exchange energy.
Specifically, unsteady flow phenomena are directly responsible for: (1) flow induced vibrations, both flutter and forced response, (2) off-design performance limitations including surge line management, and (3) aeroacoustics, specifically discrete frequency noise generation.
With unsteady flow being the driving phenomena for these technical areas which have a primary effect on advanced engine design, development and performance, the research at RAMP is directed at unsteady flow in turbomachines.

This paper presents preliminary results on the use of low flow, high momentum, pulsed air injectors to control the onset of stall in a low-speed, axial flow compressor.
By measuring the unsteady pressures in front of the rotor, the controller determines the magnitude and phase of a stall cell and controls the injection of air in front of the rotor face.
An explanation of this effect is proposed based on the quasi-steady effects of air injection on the compressor characteristic curve.
