A centrifugal pump of radial shrouded impeller type is used to suck water from the suction tank and deliver to the flow measuring tank through a throttle valve.
The apparatus consists of two pumps (an axial flow pump and a centrifugal pump) mounted with their impeller centers on a common axis and can be alternatively driven by an electric motor.
The volumetric flow rate is measured by using a convergent nozzle mounted at the inlet of the suction diffuser.

Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Axial tilt   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Axial tilt is an astronomical term regarding the inclination angle of a planet's rotational axis in relation to its orbital plane.
The axial tilt may equivalently be expressed in terms of the planet's orbital plane and a plane perpendicular to its axis.
The Earth's axial tilt varies between 21.5° and 24.5° with a 41,000 year periodicity (currently decreasing: 24.049 in 3300 BC, 23.443 in 1973, 23.439 in 2000), while the direction of the tilt gradually undergoes precession, moving in a slow circle over a period of about 25,800 years.

The earliest pump was described by Archimedes around 300 BC and is known as the Archimedes screw pump.
Such a pump produces a constant flow regardless of intake pressure or outlet pressure, unless the intake pressure drops below a certain limit, causing cavitation, or the outlet pressure exceeds the capacity of the pump, causing pump failure.

Within Axial Flow Pumps, the impeller pushes the liquid in a direction parallel to the pump shaft.
Axial flow pumps are sometimes called propeller pumps because they operate essentially the same as the propeller of a boat.
The impeller of a typical axial flow pump and the flow through a radial flow pump are shown in the illusatration below.

 Pump
Pumps work by using mechanical forces to push the material, either by physically lifting, or by the force of compression.
Pumps fall into two categories: positive displacement pumps, which force fluid from one sealed chamber to another with little leakage, and dynamic pumps, which use the momentum of the fluid to move it across an unsealed chamber.
This type of pump forces the fluid from one chamber to another by reducing the volume of the first chamber while increasing the volume of the second.

To provide an experimental flow field in which one might expect better comparisons with numerical computations, both the inlet guide vanes and rotor blades were designed to avoid separation on the rotor blades from the standpoint of flow diffusion.
From similarity considerations, the volumetric flow coefficient was derived as phi = Q / (n * D_tip^3) where Q is the volume flow rate, n is the rotor shaft speed in revolutions per second, D_tip is the rotor blade diameter, and V_ref is the inlet reference axial velocity.
Axially, the rake measurements were acquired at the same location as the five-hole probe surveys, 49.7% chord downstream of the IGV trailing edge.

The axial flow pump is the preferred type of reversible pump for the preferred embodiment of the present invention.
Generally this type of pump is not made in small sizes because the manufacture of the blading is difficult and expensive and because the tolerances required, particularly the clearance gap between the tip of the rotors and the inside of the chamber in which the rotors turn, must be very close.

In an axial pump, the flow into (called "suction") and the flow out from (called "discharge") both go in the same direction as the axis of rotation of the blades.
Peristaltic pumps work in a similar way to intestines, in that liquid is run through a tube which is squeezed in such a way as to push the liquid along.
The advantage of these pumps is that nothing touches the fluid except the tubing, so this sort of system is often used to move bodily fluids, as during open-heart surgery.

Bicycle pumps (the ones we use when fixing a flat bicycle tyre) are different from fans because there are no rotating blades to move the air, and the gas becomes pressurised at one end of the pump.
Bicycle pumps have a variety of outlets and valves for the passage of air; all of them involve a piston set inside the casing which takes air in at one end and forces the air into the tyre at the other, using a piston that slides inside the pump-housing.

Axial Flow Pumps Available At York Fluid Controls
Axial flow pumps are a common type of water pump that essentially consists of a propeller in a tube.
The main advantage of a axial flow pumps is that they can easily be adjusted to run at peak efficiency at low-flow/high-pressure and high-flow/low-pressure by changing the pitch on the propeller.
Axial flow pumps have the smallest of the dimensions among any of the conventional pumps and are more suited for low heads and higher discharges.

Chapter 7 - Hydrodynamics of Pumps - Christopher E. Brennen
Axial flow inducers are intended to improve the cavitation performance of centrifugal or mixed flow pumps by increasing the inlet pressure to the pump to a level at which it can operate without excessive loss of performance due to cavitation.
In gas/liquid flows the higher the velocity the greater the degree of bubble fission at inlet and the smaller the bubbles.
Both approaches to free streamline flows have been used in a wide range of cavity flow problems and it is necessary to restrict the present discussion to some of the solutions of relevance to attached cavitation in pumps.

I am having some problems with large axial flow pumps, generating a lot of torque and power and the gearboxes are running very hot.
One possible option worth trying is to reduce the speed of the pumps a fraction, and hence the torque and power decrease by factors fo 2 and 3 respectively.
You say the pumps are generating a lot of torque and power, actually you mean that a lot of power and torque is being transmitted through the gearboxes.
