Dave's PDA Place - Review: Proporta Axim Case   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Axim X5 has a number of buttons and ports that should be exposed (unlike my iPAQ 3600 that only has a few), so I was interested to see how Proporta would make a case that protects the device, while still leaving parts of it easily accessible.
Proporta accomplishes the task of holding the Axim in the case while it is closed by a partial aluminum cover on the base and a small piece of aluminum on the top.
The aluminum Axim X5 case retails for $39 US (£27.45 in the UK) shipped from Proporta and is likely one of the best hard cases available for the Axim.

Axim serial connections   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
So, the adapter I built connects batteries to pin 4 which makes the Axim think there is a device attached.(The minimum voltage that triggers the Axim is about 1.6V) The problem with this is that the batteries will eventually go dead if they continue to be attached to the Axim part of the cable.
Connect pin 5 axim to pin 5 on the other connector and to the negative side of the batteries.Connect pin 2 on the Axim side to 3 on the GPS side, and pin 3 on the Axim side to pin 2 on the GPS side.
When the Axim asserts DSR(pin 6) the transistor turns on and allows data to flow from the GPS, when DSR is off, no data flows from the GPS.

Amazon.com: Dell Axim X5 300 MHz Pocket PC: Electronics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Axim X5 is equipped with Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 Premium and pre-installed with familiar applications like Pocket Word and Pocket Excel, along with a calendar, contacts database, voice recorder, and a number of other built-in features.
And with its removable, rechargeable battery, the Axim X5 is never tied to its cradle--simply leave a spare battery charging in the cradle, and swap your battery when it's low.
I've had the AXIM in my hand for as long as 4 hours and, because of the size, shape and rubberized gripping surfaces, I have experienced no cramping or muscle tension.

The Axim keyboard has buttons on each side of the unit which are a little bit easier to deal with.
As soon as my Axim carrying case arrives, I plan to switch from the Jornada to the Axim as the Pocket PC I carry to work each day.
Although the Axim thumb keyboard is clearly inferior (especially since I cannot easily see the keys in darkened presentation rooms), I feel it is good enough to use under most lighted environments.

One of these devices is called the Axim X3i, and it's the first Pocket PC under $400 that comes with built-in Wi-Fi.
The Axim X3i's list price is $380, which makes it one of the lowest-priced Wi-Fi enabled handhelds on the market.
I wish the Axim X3i offered a flip cover and Bluetooth, but I think most users will be happy with this model.

Geek.com PDA Review: Dell Axim X5 Advanced   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
I saw all the news on the Dell Axim Pocket PCs upcoming release, but was very content with my Jornada 568 and had no desire to switch.
I know many people who are content with the Axim, but also think that the low cost glosses over many issues that people may be more critical of if they had paid US$400+ for the device.
I give the Dell Axim X5 Advanced 3.5 Geekheads for Quality because it is well constructed, feels solid, has nice rubber sidegrips and feet, and includes many options only found in the expensive models.

PCWorld.com - Dell Halts Axim Shipments
The problem lies in the firmware of Axim handhelds shipped with the new operating system, says Jess Blackburn, a Dell spokesperson.
A number of Axim users have crowded Dell's support forums and other message boards complaining about performance issues with Axim handhelds that were purchased after June 23, when Microsoft released Windows Mobile 2003.
The Axim is Dell's first PDA, and has done reasonably well amid a tough market for handheld sales.

By default (at least in Germany) the device comes with an USB docking station, also included is an A/C charger and a special adaptor, as the device lacks a separate power plug, charging is done via the data port.

The patch was meant to fix performance problems that Axim owners were experiencing with new devices installed with Windows Mobile 2003.

There are no good images of exactly what the X50 will look like, but a picture of the front without the casing on and a picture of the back show that this model won't be shaped exactly like either the Axim X5 or the Axim X3.
This means that even if Dell hasn't officially announced the Axim X50 by then, the FCC will still post all the details of this model on its web site on that date.
This asks the FCC to withhold from public view the details of the Axim X50 until November 8, which indicates that Dell currently doesn't plan to introduce this handheld for another couple of months.
