With her sultry voice, Gillars was a well-known propagandist to Allied troops, who gave her the nickname "Axis Sally." Her most infamous broadcast was made on May 11, 1944, prior to the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France.
"Axis Sally" was a female radio personality during World War II.
Born Mildred Elizabeth Sisk in Portland, Maine on November 29, 1900, she took the name Mildred Gillars as a small child after her mother remarried and moved to New York City where young Mildred dreamed of becoming an actress, but she met with little success.

One of the most notorious to be convicted was Mildred Gillars, or "Axis Sally" as she was known to the GI's who heard her Radio Berlin broadcasts.
Telling the POWs she visited that she was a Red Cross representative, she enticed them to send happy messages to suggest that living under the Nazis, even in POW camps,was a good thing.

Axis Sally was born in 1900 in Portland, Maine as Mildred Elizabeth Sisk.
Mildred Gillars, alias Axis Sally, was then transported to the Federal Women's Reformatory in Alderson, W.Va. When she became eligible for parole in 1959, she waived the right, apparently preferring prison to ridicule as a traitor on the outside.
Perhaps Sally's most famous broadcast, and the one that would eventually get her convicted of treason, was a play titled Vision of Invasion that went out over the airwaves on May 11, 1944.

I never had the opportunity to listen to Axis Sally's European broadcasts -- but I listened a lot to Tokyo Rose in the Pacific Ocean area.

Every day, Axis Sally spun Glenn Miller tunes and read the names of U.S. soldiers wounded and captured.
As for their fate if they kept fighting, Sally broadcast a show in May 1944 called "Vision of Invasion," which graphically warned that if the Allies were foolish enough to invade Europe, they would be slaughtered on the beaches.
The captured soldiers were now much better off, added Sally, because they were no longer in the cross hairs of the German Army, which was going to win the war and rule for a thousand years.

There was never an actual German broadcaster who used the "Axis Sally" name: this was a slang name given Gillars by GI listeners.
Gillars was known in these programs as "Midge," and it was under that name that she did all of her propaganda programming.

Though she referred to herself as "Midge at the Mike," American soldiers called her "Axis Sally." The program would alternate from music to racial speeches and would also include messages from American POW.
One of her favorite tricks was to convince soldiers that she was from the Red Cross and wanted to record messages for the soldier's families.
