AXMOUTH is a parish and a pleasant village, on the English Channel, at the mouth of the river Axe, 3 miles S. by E. of Colyton, and 6 miles W. by S. of Lyme Regis, and S.S.W. of Axminster.
Its parish is in Axminster union, county court district, petty sessional division, polling district and hundred, Exeter archdeaconry, and Dunkeswell rural deanery.
The manor of Axmouth was given by the Earl of Devon, in the reign of Henry II.

The internal construction, including the windows and the Norman door appear to be made of Limestone, very probably from the Beer quarries, as Axmouth was the main port of dispatch for consignments of stone from that source.
Conversely, the local shingle bank, that was ultimately to prove the undoing of Axmouth, could double as a source of ballast and a readily available source of large flints.

Axmouth Church is tucked under the ramparts of the Iron Age fort at Hawksdown and situated adjacent to the quay that marked the terminus of the eastern fork of the southern end of the Fosse Way.
The former is the last in a chain of forts stretching along the crests of the Blackdown hills and manned by the Dorset based Durotriges tribe against the Devonian Dunmonii; the latter a busy Roman port.
A church is known to have existed at Axmouth in 1090, but not necessarily on the same site.

 Branscombe Parish - The Roman, Saxon and Viking eras
Within four years, a branch of the great military road called the Fosse Way had reached Axmouth, five miles east of Branscombe, and by 50 AD the Roman headquarters for the south-west had been established at Isca Dumnoniorum, the new Roman name for Exeter.
There is quite likely to have been a prehistoric ridge-way along this route anyway, and perhaps the Romans used it as a by-road, without going to the trouble of creating an Imperial-standard all-weather road.
The estates of Branscombe, Axmouth, Salcombe and Sidbury were seized and held as Royal manors.

The two piers nearest the chancel of Axmouth Church are adorned with thirteenth century wall paintings, uncovered in the restoration of 1889.
The presentation of the church and manor of Axmouth was owned by the Priory of Loders.
The effigy in the chancel is of similar antiquity to the pictures and is thought to be that of Roger Hariet, instituted as Prior in 1320/21 and who resigned fours years later.

The small gateway towns of Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Seaton, Lyme Regis, West Bay, and Swanage that lie along this stretch of the coast are excluded from the nomination.
Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs National Nature Reserve (NNR), which lies wholly within the nominated World Heritage Area has a management plan prepared in 1998 for the site.
