I believe an Ayatollah is the deputy of the Awaited Prince, and as his deputy, he must perfect the souls of those who await him, not participate in worldly affairs that do not need direct control by the Mujtahids.
As for the opinion of Ayatollah Muhammad Al-Shirazi (May Allah rest his soul and punish his oppressors); I reflect his opinion over the matter, and I support his version of Wilayat Al-Faqeeh, which is contrary to what Sayed Ali Khamanaei practices today.
Now, Ayatollah AlKhomeini saw that the Faqeh had to take on the role and applications of the Imam's/Prophet's authority (Sala7iya) and the sayed gave an elaborate explanation to why this is necessary in his book "Al7okoma Al-Islamiyya".

I do not practice it myself, I believe it to be counterproductive to the goals of promoting Islam in the United States, but I concurrently do not believe in simply calling it "impermissible" because I don't like it when they show it on the news.
Ayatollah Sayyid Murtaza Feroozabadi says that this (narration) is mutawatir.
And I think you do know that Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Waheedi and Sayyid Muhammad Shirazi has also included this event in their fatawas.
