§13. "The Ayenbite of Inwyt". XVI. Later Transition English. Vol. 1. From the Beginnings to the Cycles of ...
The Ayenbite of Inwyt was not, however, and original work.
It was a translation of a very popular French treatise, the Somme des Vices et des Vertus (known also as Li Livres roiaux des Vices et des Vertus, and Somme le Roi), compiled, in 1279, by frere Lorens, a Dominican, at the request of Philip the Bold, son and successor of Louis IX.
Certain resemblances between the Ayenbite of Inwyt and The Parson’s Tale have led to the supposition that Chaucer was acquainted with either the English or the French version.

I've been able to find "inwyt" (or "inwit"), meaning inward knowledge, but have searched several dictionaries in vain for the term "agenbit." Help, please?
The title (originally spelled "Ayenbite of Inwyt") means 'the remorse of conscience', literally, 'the again-biting of inner wit'.
The English word agenbite is a translation of both elements of the Latin verb remordere 'to bite again', the source of English remorse.

Though contextualization is the unifying theme, the 27 studies define it variously as earlier research, context of culture, context of genres, text types, semantic fields, communications situation and utterance context, or diachronic and diatopic anchoring.
Among the topics are language periodization and the concept of middle, normalizing the word forms in the Ayenbite of Inwyt, naming and avoiding naming objects of terror, Chaucer's poetic adaptation of the medieval book curse, and Middle English prosodic innovations and their testability in verse.
Most of the contributions are from an international conference held in Hanasaari, Espoo, Finland, in June 1997.
