Aylsham is a historic market town and civil parish on the River Bure in North Norfolk, England.
John of Gaunt was Lord of the manor from 1372 and Aylsham became the principal town of the Duchy of Lancaster.
Aylsham is also the terminus for the Bure Valley Railway, the Bure Valley Path and the Marriott's Way.

It is thought that Guert was killed at Hastings and his estates became the property of William I. The manor of Aylsham was then bestowed to a Norman, Ralph Guader, Earl of Norfolk.
The oldest house in Aylsham is the Manor House, dating around 1550, although it was restored by Bishop John Jegon in 1605.
Seventeen years later a turnpike road from Aylsham to Cromer was begun and this too, brought trade to the town.

The PARISH OF AYLSHAM, including many scattered houses and villas, and the hamlets of Dunkirk and Drabblegate on the opposite side of the river, has encreased its population since the year 1801, from 1667 to 2448 souls, and comprises 4311A.2R.4P., of which 4102 acres are assessable, and 100A.
The parish is in four MANORS, viz., "Aylsham on the part of the Duchy of Lancaster," held by the Dowager Lady Suffield; Aylsham Wood or Sextons, of which Robert Copeman, Esq., is lord; Aylsham Vicarage, of which the Vicar is lord; and Bolwick Hall, of which John Warnes, Esq., is lord.
The Aylsham Medical Club, established in 1839, for this and the neighbouring parishes, has now about 300 subscribing members, who, for very small quarterly payments, are provided by this valuable institution with medical and surgical assistance for themselves and families.

Built on the abandoned track bed of the historic East Norfolk Railway's Wroxham to Aylsham line, the 15" gauge Bure Valley Railway is fast becoming one of Norfolk's most popular tourist attractions.
Aylsham boasted two railway stations until the 1950’s when like so many they were axed.
Sir Humphrey Repton 1752-1818 the architect is buried in the churchyard.

Aylsham watermill was rebuilt to a Georgian design, entirely of brick with a pantile roof in 1798 as shown on a stone plaque above one of its waterways.
A stone in the gable of one of the old maltings refers to the date of 1771 and the builder, Robert Parmeter, who was possibly anticipating the 1773 Act of Parliament that authorised the construction of the Aylsham Navigation.
Aylsham mill was vacated in the same year, and a new provender mill (preparing animal feedstuffs) was built to replace the steam mills at Dunkirk.

Its workhouse at Oulton, three-and-a-half miles to the north-west of Aylsham, was leased from Lady Sheffield and was origIn 1792, ten years after the passing of Gilbert's Act, the Oulton Gilbert Union of six parishes (Banningham, Blickling, Colby, Erpingham, Itteringham, and Oulton) was formed.
The new Aylsham Union initially carried on using the Aylsham parish workhouse, together with the workhouses at Buxton and Oulton which were adapted and enlarged in 1836 at a cost of around £1200.
Aylsham's broadly cruciform layout can be seen on the 1906 OS map, which also shows a later hospital to the north-west.
