Fire Emblem 4, released in 1996, set a new standard for the series and managed to reinvent the formula that, way back in 1990, made the Fire Emblem the hit that it was and carried it through 2 sequels.
Fire Emblem 4 is also quite a long game: there are 11 different chapters in the game, with each chapter taking anywhere from 2 hours to all afternoon to complete, depending on the strategy used.
Fire Emblem 4 basically reinvented the Fire Emblem series, and even today it still shines as an example of not only what made Fire Emblem fun in the first place, but what the series is truly capable of.

The class diversification of Fire Emblem: The Genealogy of the Holy War displaced Heroes once again, however, and the Hero class was split into the Swordmaster and Forrest classes.
Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 replaced the Forrest class with the Mercenary class (not to be confused with the unpromoted sword-using Mercenaries), which is often considered to be the forerunner of the 'modern' Hero class, due to their ability to use both Swords and Axes.
Then during the class simplification of Fire Emblem: The Sword of Seals, Heroes were returned to their place as promoted swordusers, alongside the now-entrenched Swordmasters, receiving the capability to use Axes to help differentiate the two classes.

The Fire Emblem series has been a part of Nintendo's lineup for over a decade now, and while the games all have widely varying storylines that are considered among the best plots in the game industry, there are a number of similarities that tie the games together.
This tradition began in the first Fire Emblem with Est, Katua, and Paola and continues with Falina, Fiora, and Florina in Blazing Sword.
