Ayreon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ayreon's musical style derives mostly from heavy metal and progressive rock, but combines them with genres like folk, classical and electronica to form what some call a completely new style of music.
The majority of Ayreon's albums are dubbed "rock operas" due to the fact that the albums contain complex storylines featuring a host of characters, each represented by a unique vocalist.
Ayreon's music is characterized by the use of traditional instruments in rock music (guitars, bass guitar, drums, synthesizers, electric organs) mixed with instruments more native to folk and classical music (i.e.

The result of this is that Ayreon quite often don’t sound like a Metal band at all, and even when they do they often have something that is intrinsically “unmetal” going on in their music most of the time.
Unlike most other bands that are said to have a retro sound, Ayreon don’t really pay homage to just one or two bands from the past, but have the influence of literally dozens and dozens of different ones all mixed together to make their sound.
Ayreon songs often sound a little bit “spacey”, not only through the use of sounds that sounded futuristic back in the 70s, but also because they often have an unhurried air — getting to the next verse or chorus or whatever is something that is just going to have to happen in it’s own time.

It certainly is a style that I normally avoid because I dislike such music but Ayreon seem to been an exception with me. More particularly with the parts continaing Rage; I dislike any song that yells or screams lyrics but when I heard Rage, I was instantly in love.
It's a very unique sound that Ayreon has, and I haven't really heard anything like it before, although it does remind me of Tiamat at times.

Ayreon is in fact one man, Arjen Lucassen, who goes the Alan Parsons Project route, composing epic conept albums like this one and bringing in a collection of the best and brightest singers in prog to perform them.
Ayreon does a fine job of combining classical structure to modern and old-fashioned instuments, and his compositions, although sometimes draining upon first listen, all become endearing and entertaining.

Review: "Ayreon: The Human Equation (Special Edition)" - Sea of Tranquility - The Web Destination for Progressive Music!
For those new to the band, Ayreon is actually an ongoing series of rock operas conducted by Arjen Anthony Lucassen and he typically assembles a large group of guests to fulfill his conceptual fantasies.
One departure for Ayreon is the fact that the concept doesn’t involve science fiction (I’m discounting the joke at the end of the album) but rather tells a fairly involved story of a man lying in a hospital bed in a coma.
Ayreon have been criticized in the past for being over the top and pretentious and there is nothing on The Human Equation that will change such views.

Dutch hard rock innovator Arjen Anthony Lucassen is renowned for thought provoking, groundbreaking, and spiritually intriguing rock opera epics for nearly a decade through his immense undertakings with AYREON and the recent STAR ONE project – albums whose sonic vastness is matched by the unique melding of talent Lucassen handpicks to record them.

 Ayreon Biography
Originally Arjen called the minstrel of the first Ayreon album 'Aries', because he was an orphan and they named him after his star sign.
As each Ayreon CD features a large amount of different artists, it would technically and logistically be impossible to take Ayreon as a project on the road for a tour, though recently some Ayreon songs have been performed live by Arjen's Star One band.
But especially after the highly successful release of his third Ayreon CD, the rock opera 'Into the Electric Castle', many musicians and producers have followed in his footsteps and new rock operas with multiple singers are beginning to surface all over the world.
