	Ayres Thrush - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The Ayres Thrush, formerly the Snow S-2, the Aero Commander Ag Commander and the Rockwell Thrush Commander, is one of the most successful and long-lived agricultural aircraft in the world.
		The Thrush was designed by Leland Snow and first flew in 1956, and before long was being produced in series as the S-2 by the company he founded, Snow Aeronautical.
		On June 30, 2003, Ayres' assets were purchased by Thrush Aircraft, the current producer of the aircraft.

	Ayres' Combat Cropdusters
		Among the latter is this month's subject, the Ayres Turbo-Thrush NEDS (Narcotics Eradication Delivery System), a curious hybrid crop duster and counter-insurgency aircraft.
		The Ayres V-1-A Vigilante is essentially the NEDS aircraft modified for strike duties.
		The Ayres Turbo-Thrush S2R-T65/400 NEDS and the V-1-A Vigilante have a maximum speed of about 250 mph and an economical cruising speed around 170 mph.

	A little about us...
		Thrush Aircraft acquired virtually all of the assets of the old operation on June 30, 2003 and began new, modern operations shortly thereafter.
		A training program was developed by Ayres to teach the airlines to use the tools that were manufactured and incorporate the kits into their own cowling.
		Thrush hopes to revise and expand on the groundwork begun by Ayres in this area.

		In the interim, the US State Department approached Ayres Corporation of Albany, GA to help develop a new "drug eradicator." Ayres specialized in making crop-dusters and owned the rights to the Rockwell Thrush Commander.
		The resulting aircraft, dubbed Ayres V-1-A Vigilante, was identical to the NEDS except that it was equipped to carry weapons instead of spraying equipment.
		There are 11 hardpoints (four under each wing and three tandem pylons under the fuselage) with a combined ordnance capacity of 4,200 lbs, possible weapon fits including 2.75-in.

		COMMISSIONER OF AGRICULTURE GUS R. West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass extended his condolences to the family and friends of a pilot killed in a crash while conducting Gypsy Moth spraying Sunday, May 19, 2002.
		According to initial reports, Kenneth Edward Yegella, 57, of Umatilla, Florida, was piloting a 1999 Ayres Turbo Thrush S2R when the plane went down just across the West Virginia border in Maryland, near the north end of Jennings Randolph Lake.
		Yegella was working for Maurice’s Flying Service, a Lake View, Michigan, company contracted to spray the area for gypsy moths.
