Ayuthia is on the northern main line Di the state railways, 42 M. from Bangkok.
Ayuthia is the chief town of one of the richest agricultural provincial divisions of Siam and is the headquarters of a high commissioner.
Among the innumerable ruins may be seen those of palaces, pagodas, churches and fortifications, the departed glories of which are recorded in the writings of the early European travellers who first brought Siam within the knowledge of the West, and laid the foundations of the present foreign intercourse and trade.

This Sukhothai Kingdom lasted nearly two centuries (1257-1438 A.D.) when it became a vassal state to King U-thong the founder of the City of Ayuthia in the lower part of the Menam Valley, which was subsequently mer ged into the Kingdom of Ayuthia (1438 A.D.).
During this Ayuthia period Cambodia, the remnant of the Khmer Empire, became in turn a vassal state to Ayuthia.
Ayuthia herself as the capital of Thailand in the course of history, gave place to Bangkok or Kr ung Thep as called by the Thai which was founded in 1782 A.D. and has since remained the capital of Siam or Thailand in its modern name of today.

Before Ayuthia or Yuthia was established as the capital (1350), the country was divided into a number of separate principalities bound together by race, language, religion, and customs.

A subsequent persecution, however, stopped the propagation of the Faith and no missionary entered till Siam was made a vicariate Apostolic by Alexander VII on 22 August, 1662.

These sculptures were taken to Ayuthia by the Thai after conquering the Khmer capital in approximately 1350.
The Mon King sacked Ayuthia in 1568 and brought them to Bago.
In 1599 the Arakan King Yazagyi conquered Bago and moved the figures to his capital, Mrauk-U. Their survival against all odds gave the two guardians magical power, in the minds of some devotees.

Accordingly to one sources, Sri Ayudhya did not take part in the battle as she was on the way back to Satthip naval base after relieved by Dhonburi naval group a couple of days before.
Other sources says that Sri Ayuthia took part in battle and was beached too, but later refloated and repaired in Japan by the end of 1941 and Dhonburi capsized and sank while under tow after being refloated.
The action was part of during a short-lived conflict with France, which started in November 1940 and ended with an armistice signed 12 days after Dhonburi was sunk.
