Ayyankali was born Kali to Ayyan and Mala of Vanganoor, 13 km North of Thiruvananthapuram in Travancore, on 28 August 1863 as one of their seven children in the Pulaya caste.
While playing football with children of his age the ball kicked by Ayyankali fell on the roof of the house of a Nair, who was very angry and forbade him to play with upper caste children.
Ayyankali formed an organization called "Sadhu Jana Paripalana Sangham (SJPS)" which took radical direct action to achieve justice for the oppressed and subjugated community.

On December 7, the Rally held its first meeting at Thiruvangur, the birthplace of Dalit leader Ayyankali, who demanded equal rights for Dalits and education for Dalit girls.

The struggles of the Pulayas for access to roads and schools led to Pulaya riots at the turn of the century in Cape Comorin, Neyyattinkara and Vaikom and these riots were suppressed by the government.
The struggle for education led by Pulaya leaders, Ayyankali and Vallikara Choti led the Tiruvitamkur Government to grant Pulayas the right of education in government schools in Balaramapuram and Pullattu in 1914.
So the reformers who represented the backward communities such as Sree Narayana Guru, Kumaran Asan, Ayyankali, Vakkom Abdul Khadar Moulavi and many of their followers opposed the practice of limiting knowledge only to the upper strata of the society, the privileged few of the middle class who were the main beneficiaries of modern education.

Policemen stand guard at the godown of Famous Marketing, which was attacked by suspected activists of the Ayyankali Pada in Kochi on Friday morning.
SUSPECTED activists of the Ayyankali Pada, a banned Naxal outfit in the State, ransacked a Coca-Cola godown in the heart of the city and destroyed the soft drinks by dousing them with kerosene and diesel before setting them on fire.
The incident took place on Friday at around 10.30 am in the godown of Famous Marketing Company located near Kadavanthra when 15 men launched the attack while cola bottles were being loaded into a delivery vehicle.
