Tahsil and subdivision Bansgaon, occupying the southern portion of the district, consists of parganas of Dhuriapar, Chillupar, Bhauapar and Unaula.It adjoins tahsil Gorakhpur in the north, district Deoria in the east, district Basti in the west and is separated by Ghaghra from the district Azamgarh in the south.
83º 05' E and 83º 56' E. The district occupies the north-eastern corner of the state alongwith the district of Deoria, and comprises a large stretch of country lying to the north of the river Ghaghra, the deep stream of which forms its southern boundary with district Azamgarh.
In 1820, the chakla of Azamgarh and the greater part of Mahul were transferred to Ghazipur and Jaunpur respectively and after the freedom struggle of 1857, a strip of the terai in the north was transferred to Nepal.

 Rediff On The NeT: 26 killed in UP hailstorm
Reports received by the state headquarters in Lucknow said the hailstorm left 13 dead in Azamgarh district, while seven people were killed in Chandauli, four in Varanasi and two in Mau.
The villages in Azamgarh district where the deaths were reported from included Zamirkandra, Joharakhpur, Madhuban, Akrapur, Shikchanpur, Gadanpur, Azmatgarh, Tiwari Padri, Devpur and Badio.
According to Rajiv Ratna Shah, the principal secretary (home), the hailstorm accompanied by rain caused widespread damage to property and standing crops in Kandarapur, Viyanpur and Ahraula police stations areas of Azamgarh district.

In 1891, the commissionership of Gorakhpur, comprised the districts of Gorakhpur, Basti and Azamgarh.
Gorakhpur, before 1857, was the headquarters of a Division which included the modern districts of Gorakhpur, Basti, Azamgarh and part of Ballia but after the freedom struggle of 1857 the whole (the then Gorakhpur Division) was merged with the Banaras (Varanasi) Division.
For effective control, the division is subdivided into four areas, three having their headquarters in Gorakhpur city and the remaining one at Kauriram.

The tube-wells division of the department falls under the irrigation works circle, Gorakhpur, headed by a Superintending Engineer, with headquarters at Gorakhpur, At the district level the division is under the charge of an Executive Engineer stationed at Gorakhpur, exercising control simultaneously over the districts of Basti, Deoria and Azamgarh.
The district forms part of the Gorakhpur provincial division (under circle VI) which has jurisdiction over the district of Deoria, Basti, Azamgarh, Ballia and Ghazipur as well.
The division is in the charge of a deputy conservator of forests with headquarters at Gorakhpur.

On July 18, the British regained Azamgarh but they son found their position untenable and were compelled to retire with the result that the entire district of Azamgarh was abandoned except for tahsil Nagra (now included in Ballia district).
On June 3, the struggle broke out at Azamgarh and on the same day Ballia rapidly fell in to a disorganized state and general anarchy prevailed there for as time.
In 1832 a redistribution of territory was effected and parganas Sikandarpur and Bhadaon were assigned to Azamgarh.

A batch of British troops under Col. Milman in the Azamgarh district attacked him but by the 27th of march Azamgarh came under Kuer Singh's control while the combined force of Dames and Milman lay besieged in the entrenchment near the jail.
Kuer Singh was soon at Lucknow where the Nawab of Oudh presented him "Khillat", a roll of honour, a few thousand rupees and a "Firman" for the district of Azamgarh.
In a strategic move Kuer Singh left Azamgarh on the 13th of April with a part of his troops and advanced towards Ghazipur.

Justice R.M. Mishra passed the order on Tuesday on a writ petition filed by a retired state government employee, Surendra Kumar Tiwari, a resident of Azamgarh district.
Allahabad (PTI): Allahabad High Court has ruled that the date of birth of an employee cannot be corrected once it is entered in the service book on voluntary disclosure by the employee concerned.
