EAST LONDON -- A former Azanian Peoples' Liberation Army (Apla) cadre told the TRC's amnesty committee here yesterday that the killing of Elliot farmer Mike Meyers had been "accidental" as the original plan was to kidnap him and hand him to an Apla commander for interrogation on his Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB) connections.
He said he never participated in the trial as it was presided over by "oppressors, the same people I was fighting" and he did not recognise the judge.
Throughout the hearing he struggled to answer questions, saying he was having hearing problems as a result of the assault he had suffered at the hands of the police.

People were saying he was unapologetic but I soon discovered that for Letlapa saying ‘sorry’ is too easy.

 Geriatric generals on full pay
Johannesburg - Several "very senior" former Umkhonte weSizwe and Azanian Peoples Liberation Army members in the defence force, including a number of generals, have been sitting at home with full salaries and benefits while they are waiting for approval to retire.
The defence force has confirmed that at least three generals older than 60 in the army are on "special leave" for this reason, although it has been established that at least 18 and even as many as 28 senior officers are on similar leave.
The benefits for which they are waiting are pension-reflected recognition for their years of service to MK or Apla, which still has to be approved by the cabinet.

However, most people agree that prior to the last decade of the twentieth century, farm attacks were a relatively unknown phenomenon in South Africa, although during interviews with police officials some have indicated that such attacks did in fact occur from time to time.
Those attacks formed part of a larger, more general onslaught by the liberation movements, which were still banned at that stage and, statistically speaking, they did not pose a threat to the farming community as a whole.
HRW points out that people living on this type of smallholding are particularly vulnerable to attacks since they are effectively part of the city crime environment.

“Apla and Umkhonto we Sizwe (ANC’s military wing) members received a raw deal from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as most of the victims of the apartheid struggle are behind bars but perpetrators such as Wouter Basson are walking free,” said PAC president Motsoko Pheko.
The letter further states that former Apla fighters had to find their own legal representation while perpetrators of apartheid crime were represented and their legal fees paid by the state.
The continued incarceration of Apla and MK cadres went against international human right conventions as some of them were still on death row, although the practice had been ended in South Africa, Pheko said.

A State witness told the East London High Court on Monday that it was the younger of the Ncamazana brothers, 22-year-old Simnikiwe, who instigated the armed robbery that led to the fatal shooting in May this year of local businessman, Martin Whitaker (37).
Ncamazana and his elder brother, Dumisani (27), a pardoned former cadre of the Azanian Peoples Liberation Army (Apla), face nine charges including two of murder, armed robbery, housebreaking, illegal possession of firearms and defeating the ends of justice.
The case gained immediate prominence shortly after the arrest of the Ncamazanas when it came to light that Dumisani, a former Apla cadre, was among the 33 prisoners granted a presidential pardon and released from the Middeldrift Maximum Prison just two weeks before the Whitaker killing.

Most people are not rational and can be manipulated by playing on their fears and desires, the way the majority of South African Whites were manipulated by the media and the churches in their country in 1994.

Wolpe's recipe for success was to re-ignite "the ability to communicate" among the warring parties and institutions in Burundi, whose representatives were accustomed to "screaming at each other" or worse, he said.
To tackle the problem, Wolpe said, the Wilson Center worked to identify 100 leaders around whom a training program could be built based on "conflict analysis, strategic planning and problem solving." This group became a network that reached out to local leaders and opinion makers throughout the nation.
