Distillation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The minimum in distillation is flash distillation, where either the temperature is rapidly increased or pressure reduced, and vapor and liquid fractions are thus obtained, which may be processed as such.
The device used in distillation is referred to as a still and consists at a minimum of a reboiler (pot) in which the source material is heated, a condenser in which the heated vapor is cooled back to the liquid state, and a receiver in which the concentrated or purified liquid is collected.
A distillation apparatus sometimes used by chemists is a rotary evaporator to distill (or evaporate) away solvent from a mixture.

Azeotropic distillation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In chemistry, azeotropic distillation is any of a range of techniques used to break an azeotrope in distillation.
A common distillation with an azeotrope is the distillation of ethanol and water.
For the distillation of ethanol for gasoline addition, the most common means of breaking the distillation is the use of molecular sieves.

In chemistry, azeotropic distillation refers to a range of techniques used to break an azeotrope in distillation.
It will actually be distilled to something slightly less, like 95.5% The 95.5% alcohol is then sent to a distillation column that is under a different pressure, one that pulls the azeotrope down, maybe to 93%.
For the distillation of ethanol for gasoline addition, the most common means of breaking the distillaiton is the use of molecular sieves.

The vapor condensate from the azeotropic distillate operation is therefore passed to a separator or decanter and the azeotroping agent-containing phase is returned as reflux to the distillation column.
In this distillation, 95% of the ethylene glycol fed is recovered in the distillate.
Example 1 is repeated in the manner described at 30 psig, except that 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene is used as the azeotropic distillation solvent, the reflux ratios of the ethylene glycol-containing phase are 1:1, 1.8:1, and 2.6:1, the bottoms or reboiler temperature is 230.degree.

Introduction to Distillation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Distillation columns are designed based on the boiling point properties of the components in the mixtures being separated.
Thus the sizes, particularly the height, of distillation columns are determined by the vapour liquid equilibrium (VLE) data for the mixtures.
A homogenous azeotrope cannot be separated by conventional distillation.

Purification process for silane compound - Patent 5804040
Thus, when methoxytrimethylsilane is present during the distillation operation of a mixture of dimethoxymethylsilane and methanol, it is possible to distill off the methanol with methoxytrimethylsilane as an azeotropic mixture and to recover dimethoxymethylsilane having a boiling point of 61.degree.
An azeotropic mixture of methoxytrimethylsilane and methanol is distilled off first as the distillate fraction since the mixture exhibits the lowest boiling point, and then after substantially all the methanol has been distilled off, dimethoxymethylsilane is distilled off as the balance fraction when the top of the column reaches a temperature of about 61.degree.
Since the azeotropic mixture of methoxytrimethylsilane and methanol is not easily separated from dimethoxymethylsilane, the reflux ratio is considerably large, for example 100, when the azeotropic mixture is distilled off while dimethoxymethylsilane is left in the column.

The azeotropic distillation is conducted in a way that the amount of water and additive forming an azeotrope with water in the bottom stream of the distillation column is less than 1 percent by weight, preferably less than 0.1 percent by weight and most preferably less than 0.02 percent by weight in total.
The pre-distillation prior to the azeotropic distillation or extractive distillation leads to a lower accumulation of impurities in the additive or extraction solvent recycle of said dewatering step and therefore less effort is necessary to remove said impurities, i.
The distillate was condensed and transferred to a phase separation vessel, in that it separated to a benzene phase and an aqueous phase.

Put your column on the map
A single-feed distillation column can be designed with sufficient stages, reflux and material-balance control to produce a variety of different separations ranging from the direct mode operation (pure low-boiling node taken as distillate) to the indirect mode of operation (pure high-boiling node taken as bottoms).
The exact shape of the reachable composition space is further limited by the requirement that the distillate and bottoms lie on the same residue curve (i.e., in the same distillation region) and by the material balance constraint that distillate and bottoms be colinear with the feed.
A convenient distillate composition in the two-phase LLE region is the ternary azeotrope, which is the low-boiling node in all distillation regions.

In the distillation process residues, formed by oil, grease, metals, etc., the solvents are still present in a percentage of between 20 and 50%.
This high percentage is due to the thermolability of the chlorinated solvents, not allowing a forced distillation which can cause their acidification.
A notable improvement is achieved by vacuum distillation, which enables to lower this percentage to between 5 and 8%.

An azeotrope is a mixture of two liquids that boils without any change in composition at a significantly lower temperature than its constituents.
In the case of toluene, the azeotrope has a boiling point of 84.1 degrees C while water boils at 100 degrees C and toluene at 110 degrees C. At room temperature, the toluene separates and floats on top of the water.
Distillation is continued until the toluene over the water in the collector goes from cloudy to clear and the water level stays constant.

 Extraction Procedures
The avoidance of simple distillation to perform this separation stems from the relative volatility between water and acetic acid being very close to unity and the higher volatility of water (meaning that all the water must be taken over head) leading to large energy costs per unit of acetic acid recovered.
This is done after solvent regeneration, but again the low volatility of water relative to acetic acid makes it difficult to carry out by simple distillation and as such azeotropic distillation is the usual means of removing water from the extracted acid.
This can be performed by adding a separate entrainer and carrying the azeotropic distillation out in a separate tower following solvent regeneration but if often makes sense to choose a solvent for extraction that itself can serve effectively as the entrainer for the azeotropic distillation.

"Azeotropic distillation"refers to a type of distillation in which a substance is added to the mixture to be separated in order to form an azeotropic mixture with one or more of the constituents of the original mixture.
Typically, the azeotropic mixture is heated to a temperature at which the solvate/water is driven off of Form II.
In the azeotropic distillation, it will be the boiling point at which the solvate and/or water has been driven off.

Extractive distillation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Mixtures having a low relative volatility can not be separated by simple distillation because the volatility of both the components in the mixture is nearly the same causing them to evaporate at nearly the same temperature to a similar extent, whereby reducing the chances of separating either by condensation.
The method of extractive distillation uses a solvent, which is generally nonvolatile, has a high boiling point and is miscible with the mixture but doesnt form an azeotropic mixture.
A very essential part of this type of distillation is the selection of the solvent, which plays the role of separating the two components.

In many applications extractive distillation has severe disadvantages due to a combination of a high energy consumption and a high temperature level, on which the heat has to be supplied to the process.
However, for general three phase (VLL) distillation processes in a tray column the interaction between two liquid phases, continuous and disperse, must be modelled as equilibrium while for the mass and heat transfer between vapor phase and continuous liquid phase the rate-based approach is more appropriate.
