Miskatonic University - Al Azif Project
During the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1950, the alleged original remains of the Al Azif of Abdul Alhazred were smuggled out of Tibet to India and, eventually, to the United States where, in 1982, it found its way to the Miskatonic University Library.
An extensive study is underway to compare the Tibetan with the remaining Western fragments of the Arabic language Al Azif that have survived, the fragments presumed to hav been used by the pseudo-Wormius in his Latin version.
Though the manuscript is incomplete, we have been able to compare the Tibetan manuscript with the many translations which were made before the original manuscript disappeared into the orient in the mid thirteenth century.

  The Spanish Translation of Al-Azif
In a letter to Clark Ashton Smith - 27 November 1927 - H.P. Lovecraft asserts that the last original of Al Azif in Arabic was lost before 1228: new evidence shows that it survived into the XVII Century, and suggest it may still be extant in Salamanca.
The Al Azif must have remained in Cordoba until the city was re-conquered by the Christians in 1236 and the library of the Mezquita taken by Alonso de Ojeda to Salamanca.
Firstly the year is quoted as 1612 while Freyre de Andrada attributes a date of 1512 to the publication of de Sagredo’s translation.

Azif is a word the Arabs use to refer to nocturnal insects, but it is also a reference to the howling of demons (Djinn).
It was about that time (Norse sources imply a date of 1041 or 1042) that a large body of documents arrived in Byzantium and came into the hands of Michael Psellus, the famous historian, neoplatonist and demonologist.
He watched Psellus translating Al Azif, discussed its contents, and in the confusion of a palace plunder arranged for a number of Psellus's manuscripts to be "removed".

Later the Al Azif was translated into Greek under the Greek title Necronomicon (the title is definitely not in Latin as is often claimed).
Al Azif is translated as "the book of the howling of the Jinn." This title is remarkably consistent with the meaning of "the Mad Poet" in Arabic (The One Possessed by Jinn and Whose Writings Are Inspired by the Jinn).
The Al Azif (the howling of the Jinn) is obviously related to Alazred's title: "The One Who is Possessed by Jinn and Whose Writings Are Inspired by Jinn." Al Azif being a book of poetry is consistent with the fact that almost all mystical or prophetic writings in Arabic are poems.

One speculation, that it indicates that the book was inspired by Alhazred hearing voices, certainly makes sense in the context of his status as a "mad poet" and Arab beliefs about such in the period in which he lived.
The text to which the note is appended runs as follows: The good Mussulmans fancied that they heard the sullen hum of those nocturnal insects which presage evil, and importuned Vathek to beware how he ventured his sacred person.
Beelzebub, or the Lord of Flies, was an Eastern appellative given to the Devil; and the nocturnal sound called by the Arabians azif was believed to be the howling of demons.

 [Shazrad: City of Veils] Talaal
All his life, and especially since the death of their parents, Azif has had to try to keep Talaal out of trouble: a difficult task given that Talaal was extremely adept at getting into trouble at the drop of a hat.
Certainly, Azif loves poor Talaal in his way, and would be/has been the first to defend him against jeers and bullies.
But Talaal has been as much of a burden to this Azif as he was a dream-granter to the Azif of the old world.
