The first 1 MW Azipod installation was made in 1990 on a buoy service vessel, followed by a number of offshore supply ships, and two 11.5 MW units on a pair of arctic tankers.
ABB Azipod, the jointly owned limited company (where Kvaerner Masa and Fincantieri each held a 22.5% share) was acquired by ABB in 1997 and currently forms the Propulsion Units division within ABB's Marine operations.
There are already 38 contracted units of the Compact Azipod concept (launched in the year 2000) already sees 38 contracted units for a variety of vessels, including megayachts, offshore supply ships, survey vessels and drilling semisubmersibles.

A to Z of azipods: revolutionary new propulsion systems drive 21st century cruise liners Cruise Travel - Find Articles
Thus, ships with azipods are steered without a rudder, similarly as small boats use an outboard motor for power and steering (but with their rear-mounted propellers, outboards "push" their vessels, while azipods, with forward-mounted propellers, "pull" their vessels).
The positioning of the azipods and the speed of their motors are determined by officers on the bridge.
Also, during docking procedures the azipods can be rotated to the 90-degree or 270-degree position to move the ship to the side.

The electric motor used to turn the propeller in an Azipod system is housed in a submerged propeller unit capable of rotating freely around its vertical axis.
The latest Azipod generation, currently in the launch phase, is known as the CRP Azipod.
The Azipod unit is located in line with the shaft-driven main propeller, without being physically connected to it, and offers an alternative to designs that use two propeller shafts.

Azimuthing podded drives, or azipods, is new marine propulsion technology where power and rotation are incorporated into one unit, thus ships with azipods are steered without a rudder.
The term "azipod" is an acronym incorporating azimuth (distance in angular degrees measured clockwise from a standard direction) and pod (a streamlined compartment).
Azipod propulsion is the future, and by installing this simulator, we're going to be ready for it." In Alaska, azipod propulsion technology is primarily utilized by the cruise industry by companies such as Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America Line, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Using Azipod technology, the MT Mastera and its sister ship the MT Tempera are known as double acting tankers.
These 'double acting' vessels have resolved the traditional design compromise of icebreakers: they travel forward using a conventional bulbed bow in open water for maximum efficiency, but in ice conditions these vessels navigate backwards using their stern, which is shaped like an icebreaker's bow.
It is the azipod's ability to completely reverse the direction of thrust by 180° which enables them to do this easily.

And the Azipod units make a ship quieter, virtually free of vibration, even at 23 knots, because the main propulsion motor is outside the machinery spaces and submerged in water.
With a submerged Azipod unit, however, there is the difficulty of a harsh, salty and sometimes icy environment.

Arcadia (cruise ship) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arcadia uses the Azipod system which is an azimuthing electric propulsion drive where the propulsion motor is installed inside a submerged azimuthing (unlimited 360 degrees) pod and coupled directly to an extremely short propeller shaft.
Rudders as well as stern thrusters are obsolete if an Azipod propulsion is installed astern as it is capable to provide full thrust in all directions by setting the unit's direction angle simply with the vessel's steering control.
The Azipod unit has no mechanical coupling as electric power is provided by a cable connection only, from the diesel-electric generators (Arcadia has six) to the electric motor installed in the gondola directly behind the propeller.
