Azkaban - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Azkaban is the fictional wizard prison in the Harry Potter series of books by J.
Azkaban has not played a direct part in the series, but lurks in the sidelines from time to time.
At the present moment Azkaban has been severely compromised; Professor Dumbledore has always been vocal in declaring that it was a mistake to guard Voldemort's greatest supporters with those creatures who have the most to gain if Voldemort returned to power.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) is the third in the Harry Potter film series and was directed by Alfonso Cuarón.
A mysterious convict, Sirius Black, escapes from Azkaban and sets his sights on Hogwarts, where dementors are stationed to protect Harry and his peers.
The explanation of how Sirius escaped from Azkaban and his knowledge of Pettigrew's location is not in the film, unlike the book where he tells that he saw a picture of Pettigrew (in rat form) in The Daily Prophet.

 Cuaron's Magic Touch (washingtonpost.com)
"Azkaban," the third installment in the Harry Potter series, is everything the first two films were not: complex, frightening, nuanced.
"Azkaban" is so much more sophisticated visually, and in terms of storytelling, that it's hard to believe the source material is the same.
Aside from the radical change of mood, the biggest difference in "Azkaban" is the burgeoning maturity of the film's three lead actors.

Salon.com Arts & Entertainment | "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"
Of their numerous intertwined themes, infinite longing rates pretty high: Harry's parents, a witch and a wizard, were killed when he was an infant, and he constantly wonders what they were like, and whether he's anything like them -- he longs to know.
Cuaron didn't get to dramatize that sequence: The movie versions of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and of the second book, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," were both directed by Chris Columbus, who was doggedly faithful to Rowling's plots but singularly graceless in translating their syncopated lyricism to the screen.
But "The Prisoner of Azkaban" is the first true Harry Potter movie -- the first to capture not only the books' sense of longing, but their understanding of the way magic underlies the mundane, instead of just prancing fancifully at a far remove from it.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban review (2004) - Qwipster's Movie Reviews
The plot is barely a blip on the radar for most of the first half, as we watch a tedious array of tangential scenes that might be fun to read about amid the leisurely pacing of a long book, but do little except ensure apathy despite all of the whimsical sights and sounds.
The answer to all of these things is, "Who cares?" Unless you are a hardcore Harry Potter fanatic, or a complete sheep that sees anything that is sufficiently hyped enough, this third entry is a messy, muddled snoozefest that only eye-candy addicts and J.K. Rowling zealots could truly be enthralled with.

"Azkaban" leaps into a much darker universe while still retaining all the mystery, magic and charm of the first two movies.
A dangerous wizard, Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), has escaped from Azkaban prison, something no one has ever been able to do before, and he's believed to be on his way to Hogwarts.
The Dementors suck the soul from their victims and seem especially attracted to Harry, while at the same time they're supposed to be protecting him and the other students from Black.

Reviews: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - Christianity Today Movies
The Prisoner of Azkaban is perhaps the most emotionally complex of the Harry Potter stories to date; it is here that Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) first encounters the Dementors, fearsome creatures which can suck the joy out of anyone who crosses their path, and it is here that he wrestles with his darkest, most murderous impulses.
The Dementors, who ordinarily guard Azkaban, now patrol the school grounds in seach of Sirius—and while Harry expresses a vengeful desire to kill Sirius himself, he is, if anything, even more terrified of the Dementors.
What we can say at this point is that Cuarón has produced the most terrifying and darkly humorous movie adaptation of Rowling's stories to date—his use of the Whomping Willow to convey the passing of the seasons is especially amusing—and he has given it a visual flair that was sorely missing in the previous installments.
