Azmi Bishara : Profiles of Peace : Faces of Hope Campaign : Palestinian-Israeli Conflict : AFSC
Azmi Bishara, politician, philosopher, human rights activist and novelist, is a Palestinian citizen of Israel, born in 1956 in Nazareth into a Greek Orthodox family.
Azmi Bishara’s work for equal rights for Palestinian citizens of Israel and his advocacy of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza has put him on a collision course with various right-wing political groups in the Israeli government.
Bishara’s attempts to establish a dialogue with Arab groups in Syria and Lebanon have led several of his fellow Knesset members to call for a criminal investigation of his activities.

Middle East Report Online: The Case of Azmi Bishara, Political Immunity and Freedom in Israel, by Gad Barzilai
Azmi Bishara is a vigorous intellectual and a well-known critic of the Israeli state.
Bishara has never asserted that he is part of the Israeli political consensus; to the contrary, he has openly pointed to a direct conflict between the Jewish majority and the Palestinian minority over the definition of nationality in Israel.
Bishara's immunity was canceled for neither purely legal nor constitutional reasons.

Bishara is a Palestinian citizen of Israel, one of more than one million who live inside the Jewish state, who are survivors or their descendants of the Zionist ethnic cleansing that forced most Palestinians to leave in 1947-48.
Elected to the Knesset in 1996, Bishara is a founder of the National Democratic Assembly, a party which calls for Israel to be transformed from a sectarian ethnocracy into a democratic state of all its citizens.
Azmi Bishara is the only Palestinian leader of international stature expressing a vision and strategy that is relevant to all Palestinians and can effectively challenge Zionism.

Bishara issued no clear explanation or where'd he go or why; his electorate is left bedazzled and confused, and his party is stuck between the voters and the general public trying to figure out what exactly happened to the person in charge of a major Arab political party in Israel.
The TV story said there's a rumour Azmi Bishara intends to join the Qatar University in some senior role; Bishara himself speaks through radio & newspaper interviews, telling us he's considering return to Israel.
There are speculations that Bishara asked for asylum in other countries (and presumably they turned him down).

Al Jazeera: You are being investigated by Israeli police for unpublished charges.
They say that the source of the problem is the fact that a group, or Azmi Bishara, or someone else, published their ideas freely and speak about the state of the citizens etc althought they are in the parliament.
