 MYSTERIOUS WORLD: Winter 1998: Aztalan
Aztalan was finally rescued by archaeologists and the State of Wisconsin earlier in this century.
Aztalan was surrounded by a high log fence which included watchtowers at regular intervals.
Aztalan was last occupied sometime between 1100 and 1300 A.D. There is evidence of extensive fire there at the time of its abandonment.

AZTALAN - When Robert Birmingham stands on the heights of the ancient Mississippian village that once existed here, it doesn't take much for him to see the thatch-roofed homes, the smoky fires, or the comings and goings of the people who once called this place home.
Aztalan, although it is named for the Aztec ruins that early discoverers thought it resembled, is believed to be the northernmost outpost of a people known for their mound building, their agricultural practices and their worship of the natural world.
Aztalan, he said, has always been about an ancient world shrouded in mystery and today, wrapped in winter's silence, the broad plaza and the sloping mounds and the forested river banks seem to hold tight to old, old secrets.

Aztalan - It occurred to me for about the hundredth time as I drove the Madison-Milwaukee connector the other day that thousands of motorists must think Aztalan is a dirt bike track.
And it is. The dirt bike track that wears the name Aztalan sits hard by the highway in Jefferson County and you would have to be swallowed up in interstate-induced head fog to miss it, which I grant you on that boring stretch of highway is perfectly possible.
Aztalan, a day-use park that offers hiking and picnic facilities, is two miles east of Lake Mills on County Highway Q. If you go, be sure to stop at the adjacent Aztalan Museum, which includes pioneer-era buildings and artifacts from the area.

Aztalan celebrates 75th anniversary as a park
Aztalan State Park is located on the banks of the Rock River in eastern Jefferson County, about 3 miles east of Lake Mills.
Aztalan’s beginnings as a park date back to 1922, when a group of concerned Jefferson citizens purchased the few conical mounds remaining from a cluster that once numbered more than 40.
The people who settled Aztalan built large, flat-topped pyramidal mounds and a stockade around their village, Davies says.

On October 20, 1928, almost 75 years ago, Aztalan was made into a park for the enjoyment and education of the people of Wisconsin.
The local park created in October 1928 was called Mounds Park, and was focused on the standing mounds, especially those along Highway Q. Later, the park was expanded and made into a state park, but the state park is certainly based on that first Mounds Park.
In order to bring some attention to Aztalan and to create a more dynamic park, we thought we would take advantage of the unique coincidence of the 75th anniversary of the park, and the Midwest Archaeological Conference being in Milwaukee October 16-19.

One curious aspect of the proposed cutbacks and closings is that not many years ago the notion of "heritage travel" was the big buzzword in tourism circles.
It was thought that vacationers had a great hunger for historic sites and attractions - Aztalan would be on top of any list of those - and both state and local tourism groups spent a good deal of money on programs and brochures intended to exploit such interests.
It's open to debate whether state investment and promotion of heritage travel was ever enough to be successful, or whether the public interest in old places was overstated in the first place.
