The band name, "Juventud Con Orgullo Azteca" (Youth with Aztec Pride), was chosen by its members, a majority of whom played in similar groups in Mexico before moving to the United States.
The band's tight lines and marches are led by one bugle player to the front "el capitan de la banda," with snare-style drums played by the women and bugles played by the men.
Bands existed as early as 1936, gathering at Oakland's city hall and may have even played before this time, she added.

Graham Central Station was a funk band named after founder Larry Graham (formerly of Sly and the Family Stone) and Grand Central Station in New York City.
The band's origins date from when Santana guitarist Neal Schon formed the band Azteca along with Larry Graham (bass guitar) and Gregg Errico (drums), both from Sly and the Family Stone, and Peter Sears (keyboards), from Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship.
That band, like Santana with heavy Latin influences, would eventually morph into Graham Central Station, while Schon would found Journey.

Apple of Discord is one of those bands that you can listen to with anyone: they appeal to the indie crowd, the grunge crowd, and the rock crowd.

Before she became a solo artist in 1984, drummer Sheila E. played with Azteca, the Latin jazz-fusion band led by her father, percussionist Pete "Coke" Escovedo; she also played on two of his solo albums recorded for Fantasy Records.
Sheila E. joined Prince's band for the 1987 Sign O' the Times tour and is featured prominently in the resulting film documentary of the same name.
After her brief stint ringleading the band on Magic Johnson's late-night show, The Magic Hour, Sheila E. returned to recording and released The Writes of Passage in fall 2000.

Like Weather Report and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, it was a group formed by an alumnus of Miles Davis' late-'60s bands with the intention of furthering the jazz-rock hybrid Davis had explored on albums like Bitches Brew.
The band toured Japan and recorded a second album, Light as a Feather, in London, using some of the songs Corea had written and recorded with Getz, such as "500 Miles High" and "Spain." It was released on Polydor Records.
The band went back into the studio in January 1975 and quickly cut its fifth album, No Mystery, which was released in February.
