Azulene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Azulene is an organic compound whose molecules contain 10 carbons and 8 hydrogens and consist of a five-membered ring fused to a seven-membered ring.
Azulene has a long history dating back to the 15th century as the azure-blue distillate obtained by steam distillation of Chamomile.
Azulene consists of a fused cyclopentadiene ring and a cycloheptatriene ring and is an isomer of naphthalene.

The Aromatic Plant Project ~ Aromatic Article Archives
Azulenes are generally considered latent components, "present but not evident or active" (Webster’s definition), within a number of aromatic and herbal plants.
Some azulenes occur naturally, within the plant, or the oil, while others, such as chamazulene classically a component of German chamomile, are created from a precursor within the steam distillation process.
The beauty of oils rich in azulene components at large enough percentages to influence their color profile, as the blue oils, is that you can easily determine when an oil has reached it's prime, has oxidized (subjected to air and light), through it's color changes.

 AZULENE [BICYCLO[5.3.0]DECAPENTAENE]
Azulene is a main component of chamomile extract which is used as a colouring agent (azul means blue in Spanish) in cosmetics and ointments and used as a folk medicine to treat migraine, arthritis, rheumatic diseases, and allergy.
Examples of common substituted azulenes obtained naturally are vetivazulene (4,8-dimethyl-2-isopropylazulene) from vetiver oil, and guaiazulene (1,4-dimethyl-7-isopropylazulene) from constituent of guaiac wood oil.
Various biological activities such as antiphlogistic, antiallergic, bacteriostatic from azulen class compounds are expected.

It is shown that 4- or 8-[(E)-styryl]-substituted azulenes can easily be prepared from 4- or 8-methylazulenes in the presence of potassium tert-butoxide (t-BuOK) with the corresponding benzaldehydes in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at -5° to 25° (see Scheme 1 and 2).
The latter two azulenes are not separable on silica gel.
oxidation reaction to 1-methyl- and/or 3-methyl-substituted azulenes led to the formation of the corresponding azulene-1-carbaldehydes in excellent yields.

I chose the name azulene for my website, because the chemistry of azulene is somewhat unusual--even though azulene is structurally similar to common organic compounds, such as naphthalene which is white, it is bright blue!
I synthesized azulene during my sophmore year of college, and I wrote a paper and gave a presentation about it, including information about why it is blue.
Strangely enough, azulene is now used in beauty and skin care products such as this.
