Nelson drew with Leija in their first bout on September 10, 1993 before losing the WBC title to the tough Texan in the rematch eight months later.
After regaining the belt from Leija's successor Gabriel Ruelas in December 1995, Nelson got revenge with a TKO win over Leija in the 6th round of their rubber match.

Nelson's professional boxing debut, in 1979, did not cause much furor, except for in Ghana, where he was known because of his family ties.
Nelson won all four of his fights in 1983, and he began 1984 by beating Hector Cortez[?] by decision on March 9 in Las Vegas.
May 19 of 1990, Nelson tried to join the exclusive group of three division world champion boxers by challenging world Lightweight champion Pernell Whitaker[?], but he was handled his second career loss, when Whitaker won a 12 round unanimous decision to retain the title.

The programme would include the making of a documentary film to tell the full story of Azumah's life from his childhood to his boxing exploits and the time that he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Nelson was 13-0 when called on as a late substitute to fight for his first world championship against the already legendary Sanchez.
Nelson proved to be more than that, taking the fight to the more skilled Sanchez almost from the onset.
As for Nelson, after losing to Sanchez, he rose to stardom himself, winning 19 straight fights, and both the featherweight and junior lightweight titles before his unsuccessful bid against Whitaker for the lightweight championship in 1990.

If the Nelson who was about to face Sanchez was slated to fight the Hamed who was about to fight Kelley I suspect we would have all said it was a mismatch and chosen Hamed to have won easily.
