  Pulp Film - Azumanga Daioh
That would be the only way I could describe this truly quirky series that is a very refreshing change for the jaded anime fan tired of the usual gigantic robots and huge puddles of angst and for the anime newbie still letting it all soak in with a wide grin on her face.
Azumanga Daioh follows six high school girls as well as three of their teachers from their first day of high school to their graduation, and highlights both their outrageous adventures and hi-jinks as well as their decidedly more normal activities, which still manage to elicit some seriously prolonged laughter.
In the year Azumanga Daioh aired, we saw all the characters go from their first day of high school (which is three years in Japan, following three years of the equivalent of junior high) to their graduation.

Review: Azumanga Daioh, by Bad Jew   (Site not responding. Last check: )
But Azumanga is different--it has no problem with having a 5-minute bit of Osaka dreaming about Chiyo-chan flying by means of her pig-tails across the screen, over and over again, saying each time "I'm 12 years old!" Of course, while this is funny the first time, it drags on when used repeatedly.
Azumanga, written by Kiyohiko Azuma and the flagship product of ADV's new manga division, is more of a traditional newspaper comic than a dime store one.
Azumanga is made up of four-panel jokes, each with a build-up in the first three panels and a punchline in the last.

Azumanga Daioh is a bit of an older series, but thanks to an opportunity in the from of a private FTP, I was able to download most of the series in a day or so.
Though Azumanga can appear to be generic, with it's setting and basic cast of characters, as well as childish with the animation style chosen, it is anything but that! It's one of the most hilariously funny animes I have seen since FLCL.

Azumanga Daioh I was warned in advance by other websites that despite all the praise it has gotten, Azumanga Daioh "would not be for everyone", might be a "love-it-or-hate-it" series, and might not appeal to those who do not feel particularly nostalgic about their days in high school.

Azumanga Daioh (Which translates to "Great King Azumanga" which is short for "Azuma's manga for Dengeki Daiou magazine") is a sometimes sickenly cute and funny series of 6 school girls and 2 of their teachers.
Nope, Azumanga Daioh is simply the episodic view of the lives of rather normal (if silly) schoolgirls; it occaisionally takes a trip into the absurd or surreal (That yellow cat thing or Osaka's imagination...), but mostly keeps itself grounded in the reality and eventlessness of highschool life.
Azumanga Daioh is simply a set of stories that peek into the lives of those 6 high school girls and their teachers on their 3 year journey through high school.

Due to Azumanga Daioh's straightforward premise there are few outright changes between the manga and the anime, though some jokes simply could not be adapted to an animated format and were either changed significantly or excised completely.
