Note - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When notes are written out in a score, each note is assigned a specific vertical position on a staff position (a line or a space) on the staff, as determined by the clef.
Each line or space is assigned a note name, these names are memorized by the musician and allows him or her to know at a glance the proper pitch to play on his or her instrument for each note-head marked on the page.
The remaining five notes of the chromatic scale (the fl keys on a piano keyboard) were added gradually; the first being B which was flattened in certain modes to avoid the dissonant augmented fourth interval.

In music, a note is an abstract concept used to refer both to a unit of fixed pitch which has been given a name, and also the graphic representation of that pitch in a notation system.
In English, the notes are given 7 letter names: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. Each letter name is assigned to a specific pitch regardless of the octave in which the pitch resides.
In music notation, a note is sharpened or flattened (raised or lowered) by placing a sharp symbol or flat symbol directly in front of the note.

 The Musical Scale
Note that while the mode beginning with C is the most natural musical mode, the less harmonious minor mode was regarded as more serious, and hence more suitable for church music.
Note that when the frequency of a note is multiplied or divided by the ratio of 81/80, a note is obtained with the same name.
This tuning is called the Pythagorean tuning, and the ratio between B sharp (not shown on the diagram) and C on that tuning is called the Pythagorean comma, as distinct from the syntonic comma.

In music, a note is either a unit of fixed pitch that has been given a name, or the graphic representation of that pitch in a notation system, and sometimes its duration, or a specific instance of either, so one can speak of "the second note of Happy Birthday" for example.
The 6th century philosopher Boethius is known to have used the first fifteen letters of the alphabet to signify the notes of the two-octave range that was in use at the time; it is not known whether this was his devising or common usage at the time; nonetheless this is called Boethian notation.
When the compass of used notes was extended down by one note, to a G, it was given the Greek G (G), gamma.

Musical note oscillator - Patent 4108035   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a note oscillator of the foregoing type in combination with a digital calculator for automatically calculating the proper values of the range and increment so that the repetition rate of the oscillator is set at a desired value.
By adjusting the values of the divisor and increment numbers, the note calculator 30 is able to alter the frequency of the carry pulses (CP) produced by note oscillator 30.
Note oscillator 30 produces CP pulses having a repetition rate equal to Nf, where f is the frequency of the desired tone signal and N is the number of sample points stored in the waveshape memory for a complete cycle of the tone.

If you sing music that starts in C major, and then it moves to G major, then it doesn't matter what exact pitch you used for your C, so long as the two keys are related to each other in the same way.
Perception of notes an octave apart as the same note is universal to all cultures.
However again, selections of notes are used, maybe of seven, or perhaps twelve notes at a time, so it is going to be rather rare to need more than fifteen of these notes at once in a single chord.

Making Music with the Basic Stamp
Musical instruments, on the other hand, have a logarithmic frequency characteristic, which is known as, an equal tempered scale.
Converting musical notes to a frequency is simple to do, either using a table as appears here, or mathematically, but we still need to convert the frequency to a Note Number, which the Basic Stamp will use to produce a note of the required frequency.
Determining which is the closest Note Number produced frequency to that required is not simple, as musical note frequencies are not linearly spaced, but logarithmic.

As we change the value of B, the frequency of the wave gets longer or shorter and the pitch of the note gets lower or higher.
I found a few (but not many) references to Mathematica music, but they were much, much fancier routines that made little or no reference to sine waves.
