The sole surviving example of this model of the Flying Fortress exists at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C., and is known as "The Swoose"...former crew member Frank Kurtz named his daughter Swoosie Kurtz after this aircraft.
Likely because of the shortcomings of the Fortress I (B-17C), the RAF decided not to use the Fortress IIA as a daylight high-altitude bomber, the role for which it had been designed.
After World War II, armament on the SB-17Gs was removed; it was reinstated when the Korean conflict began.
